Do you stand up for yourself?! My husband Scott and I took Jordan Peterson’s Big 5 compatibility test. On agreeableness (cooperative, polite, friendly) I am in the 88th percentile, he is in the 8th. Suffice to say I let a lot of things roll off my back and don’t stand up for myself often enough. Scott needs to get what he wants (at least 92% of the time ). There’s no right or wrong, it’s just how you naturally respond. A few months ago, right before Izzy was born, I compl...etely broke. I had made too many concessions over a short timeframe. When the last one was thrown at me I swear my brain completely short circuited. This is the downfall of the agreeable person. If you are like me and you often find yourself shrugging your shoulders and giving in, watch out as you too will snap eventually. Us agreeable’s brush a lot off. Its because we are actually ok in the moment, these small concessions, compromises or exceptions don’t matter enough to put up a fight. But each time it happens remember that it’s like taking a piece from a Jenga tower.... From time to time switch the ok fine to this is what I want. Watch the movie you want to watch, do the activity and they can stay home with the kids, tell your boss you can’t stay late. Try it out EVEN IF YOU ARE FINE SAYING YES. Stand up for yourself, be decisive, say no, call that jerk out...all before you break. . . . . . #businesspsychology #businesscoach #clarity #purpose #business #leadership #founder #psychology #psychologist #psychology #selkirkperformance #eveduke #personality #big5personality #organizationalpsychology #leadershipcoaching #mission #culture #workplaceculture #management #mentalhealth #alpha #selfcare

Here is a simple 2 step process to know if your people are being productive: 1. Set clear deliverables. 2. Track them with Key Performance Indicators.... The deliverable will tell them what they are supposed to do, and the KPI’s will tell you how they are doing. Keep the KPI as simple as possible like a single number that they enter into a shared spreadsheet that you can check at the end of the day or week. If you want to get fancy you can get into setting a clear vision, mission and goals but it really doesn’t need to be any more complex than these two things. . . . . . . #businesspsychology #businesscoach #clarity #purpose #vision #business #leadership #founder #psychology #psychologist #selkirk #selkirkperformance #eveduke #organizationalpsychology #leadershipcoaching #mission #culture #workplaceculture #management #managementdevelopment #work #thepsychologyofwork #productivity #kpis #productivityhacks #performance #company #business #businessowner #businesswoman #businesstips

How is your virtual transition going? Maintaining connection, engagement and culture with a remote team is a huge challenge, we miss all of the day to day micro interactions that happen when we are in the same space. Here are a few quick tips for those managing a remote team to keep you connected: Reach out daily | Touch base with your team members by phone or zoom to stay on track and up to date. This sounds like a lot but 1 x 15 min call can save hours in email & msging.... Take it easy on the company wide chat channels | Chatter, memes, encouragement etc can be fun but clog up the chat, if you find yourself wasting time scrolling through a feed in case there is an important message you may have missed, you need to refine your chat game. Don’t reply all. | Every message is like a virtual poke, don’t send it to everyone unless they NEED to know. All jokes aside, hold off on that raise! It’s not the most effective way to keep an employee happy or motivated. Often when someone says they are underpaid or overworked these are just symptoms of the real issue, they aren’t getting enough appreciation or gratitude for their contribution. Here’s some fun numbers:... - 69% of employees would work harder if they were more appreciated - It costs $5000 on average to hire a new employee - 81% of employees would consider leaving their job - 74% of younger staff would take a pay cut to work at their ideal job - Companies with a highly engaged workforce are 21% more profitable - 91% of the surveyed employees think that their leaders lack communication skills . . . . #businesspsychology #businesscoach #clarity #purpose #vision #business #leadership #founder #psychology #psychologist #organizationalpsychology #leadershipcoaching #mission #culture #workplaceculture #management #managementdevelopment #work #thepsychologyofwork #motivation #engagement #employeeengagement See more

Are you hiding? I have a client who puts on his superhero cape when he interacts with his team. I was conflicted on this because although he was showing up as a strong and stable leader, his team could tell that there was an inauthenticity to their interactions. Because they didn’t know who he really was, they didn’t trust him. His cape ensured that he show up and be on but also created a barrier - which made it ineffective. ... People need to know who you are. And you don’t need to hide because there is value in every type of personality. So, how much of ourselves do we reveal to our teams? As a leader or manager, your tone, body language and emotional state will rub off on the team and set the tone for the office or meeting. So leadership 201 requires you to be constantly aware of how you show up, react and interact with those around you. That said, masking your true self is exhausting, and people can tell. It’s a dance. Between seizing the moments to be candid, vulnerable and sincere when you can, and maintaining the culture and emotional state of the office by setting the tone and showing up strong under pressure. Be yourself, but just better. If you’re ever stuck, just think of the whale; humble and honest, but graceful, strong and calm when the seas are rough . . . . . #businesspsychology #businesscoach #clarity #purpose #vision #business #leadership #founder #psychology #psychologist #organizationalpsychology #leadershipcoaching #mission #culture #workplaceculture #management #managementdevelopment #candor #radicalcandor #selflove #beyourself See more

Building an epic team step 5! Keep the team happy In the age of leadership gurus Simon Sinek, John C. Maxwell, Patrick Lencioni, Marshall Goldsmith, Ken Blanchard and the like, treating employees well is no longer a suggestion but a well-known motivator and requirement for ensuring long-lasting growth. That doesn’t mean intrinsically considering other people comes naturally to everyone; it is a cultivated strength like any other. ... So without advocating for the low hanging fruit of free snacks, fun job titles, and team building pow wows, what are ongoing practices that make an impact? The answer is training, mentorship, guidance, and respect. An investment of time is required, it is called frontloading, and it is everything. Spend 10 hours up front to develop a team member and save 1000 later. The higher up the ladder, the more crucial mentorship becomes because you are now training the next succession of leaders on high level thought processes, habits and behaviours that have served the company to date.
