Thanks to the Indigenous Peoples (and lack of knowledge from explorers) for our country's name... in 1535, Jacques Cartier met two Aboriginal youths. When asked where he had landed, he was told "Kanata", meaning "village" or "settlement". He took it to mean a larger area, which was later expanded to mean the entire country.
