POLICE ISSUE FRAUD WARNING AFTER TWO ELDERLY WOMEN DEFRAUDED One lost more than $1 million LONDON, ON (December 9, 2019) London police are urging the public t...o stay informed of the various ways criminals deceive their victims for financial gain after two elderly women were defrauded of significant amounts of money. Bank employees, representatives with the Canada Revenue Agency, or other such officials, will never ask for payment via Bitcoin, gift cards or through money transfer services (e.g. Western Union). There are currently a number of different scams and frauds being used by criminals. These scams are sophisticated and criminals are using technology to trick the victim into believing that the information presented to them by the suspect is real, said Detective Sergeant Henry Pateman of the General Investigation Section. Don’t ever provide personal or financial information to anyone unless you know the person you are giving it to. Two elderly women were recently defrauded of significant sums of money in unrelated incidents. In the first case, an elderly woman was contacted by someone who said her credit card had been compromised and that she needed to provide money to the police through a Bitcoin machine to assist in the investigation. In all, she lost $85,000. This investigation is ongoing. In the other, a woman reported being defrauded of approximately $1.25 million between 2013 and 2018 after the suspect borrowed money under false pretenses. A *33-year-old London man is charged with fraud over $5,000 and possessing proceeds obtained by crime over $5,000 in relation to this case. He was arrested on Friday, December 6, 2019, and is expected to appear in London court on December 12, 2019, in relation to the charges. If you suspect that someone you know may be taking advantage of a vulnerable or elderly person (financially or otherwise) or if you suspect an elderly individual you know is being victimized, please contact the London Police Service or Crime Stoppers immediately. Please report any suspicious telephone calls, text or e-mails to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca. If you are the victim of a fraud you can contact the London Police Service Fraud Telephone Intake line at 519-661-5515, extension 5257. *For full name of the accused, visit our website: https://www.londonpolice.ca/Modules/News/index.aspx
