"This is immoral. We do not respond to disability discrimination in the way that we should." When a woman who has an intellectual disability was taken to a hosp...ital in a small Oregon town because she had COVID-19, a doctor decided, because of her supposed "low quality of life, to write do-not-resuscitate and do-not-intubate orders. People who worked with the woman were angry and got help. Thanks to the involvement of lawyers working for a disability rights organization, the woman received life-saving treatment. But it seems this is not an isolated case. After efforts by advocates, Oregon has announced new guidelines that emphasize the responsibility of doctors and hospitals not to deny care on the basis of disability. See more
