Lately I've been sitting so much more than normal and oh boy my back has been feeling compressed and rounded and generally not nice. To help reduce my postural strain I've been doing this spinal mobility exercise that promotes segmental movement in multiple ranges. To give this a try begin seated. If you're in a chair bring your pelvis forward towards the edge of the chair so you have space to extend behind you. ... Bring your hands behind your head supporting the neck. Moving slower than you want*, begin to exhale and curl forward from the top our your head down the spine. As you exhale slowly being to uncurl until back in a neutral position and from neck down begin to extend backwards allowing elbows and chest to open. Repeat 5 times. * Video shows exercise at 3x the speed. I like this movement because you can do it sitting at your desk or on the couch and unlinked cat/Cow you don't need to be on hands and knees. #Reposting some helpful tips for snow shoveling from @encompasskitchener Encompass Health Kitchener Let's talk snow shovelling posture!... Winter in Ontario means snow and that is all too often accompanied by snow removal injuries. Don't let your snow shovelling wear you down. The most common mistake in snow shovelling is the lift and twist method. This requires your body to load the spine while moving in one direction repetitively. This motion tends to put a lot of strain on the low back. Instead work on gathering the snow towards the snow bank. This allows you to stand squarely behind your shovel and push equally with both hands. Once all your snow is gathered stand facing the snowbank, bend at the knees and lift your shovel and gently toss forward. Pro tip - you can get a second handle add on to snow shovels at the hardware store. These go halfway down the shovel and allow for improved ergonomics. Very helpful for heavy snow, larger spaces or if you're someone who struggles with shovelling. And remember that we are here to help keep your joints moving and muscles loose to help prevent those injuries from happening in the first place. I've been sitting so much lately I've really started to feel it in my body. Took some time to roll things out and thought I would share my quick hip and hamstring care. I'm using a @tuneupfitness ball. Here are a few of my favorite moves - sped up significantly for demonstration sake but ideally holding/repeating each movement for 1-2 minutes. #1 - place ball at hamstring attachment to the sit bones - sink in.... #2 - open leg to the side rolling over the ball at hamstrings - move slower than you want to. #3 - bring ball to outter hip and slowly roll over top - use your other foot to manage depth. #4 - place ball in the glutes and gentle roll yourself over the tune up balls slowly moving up and down and side to side- use hands and feet to help manage depth. If you have really tight glutes or hips this might be too much pressure. You don't always need to be struggling to benefit from investing in your mental wellbeing. ... As someone with an anxiety disorder I have found a lot of coping skills and support through therapy. It's a practice I've returned to over the last 20+ years - with different goals each time. I have recently decided to return to therapy as a way to invest in my mental wellbeing and as a form of support to help balance out all of 2020's challenges. It still surprises me the stigma around going to therapy. I mean, if you were training for a race you would get a coach right?
