Seven Starving Artists Theatre Collective 21.11.2020

To our Theatre Community and the 35//50 Initiative, Thank you for including us in this movement and we apologize for the lateness of our response, as our collective has been on hiatus during the pandemic. Seven Starving Artists Theatre Collective’s permanent team consists of four early-career artists committed to working together to make a platform for emerging artists in Calgary/Mohkinstsis and area. We are not a formal organization and as such do not have an administrative... team or a Board of Directors. We are project-based and do not receive salaries or funding outside of specific projects. We understand that the small size of our collective does not excuse us from the responsibility of building a community founded on equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility. We recognize that our community is made up of approximately 35% BIPOC and 50% female and non-binary people, and that our artistic community does not currently reflect that composition. We believe that representation within our collective will lead to greater equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility within our community. In order to further the above goals, Seven Starving Artists is committing to the following concrete actions: - We will seek out and take part in anti-racism training for our permanent members. -We will work to build company policies that foster a safe environment for all artists, including a zero tolerance policy for sexism, racism, and bullying of any kind. - Should we be in a place to expand the permanent team of our collective, we will do so in accordance with the spirit and values of the 35//50 initiative. - Moving forward, project teams will be built following the values of the initiative, with a goal of consistently reaching or surpassing these standards of 35% BIPOC and 50% female or nonbinary artists working on every project by 2024/2025. With the above actions in mind, we would like to disclose that we are currently committed to a project whose cast and crew does not currently meet these standards. However, we will endeavour to fill the remaining positions in the design team and crew with women, nonbinary people, and/or members of the BIPOC community. We are committed to tracking and reporting annually on our progress towards this goal. We believe that organizations who cannot commit to a certain level of representation should receive restricted or probationary funding. As a team that currently consists of all white artists, we acknowledge that we will likely make mistakes in the coming years, and we commit to taking immediate action to correct those mistakes wherever possible. We value any feedback from the community that can help us reach these goals. We can be contacted directly at [email protected]. -
