Local Richmond BC boy wins his first Spelling Bee, now he's in it to W-I-N it all! 15-year old Jason Chan, a Grade 10 student from Richmond Secondary School, has just won his first-try, first-ever Spelling Bee (Spelling Bee of Canada's BC Regional Bee). He went through 16 challenging rounds to win with the words chupacabra and isomorph in the tie-breaker round., making him the 2020 BC Spelling Bee Champion (Intermediate Division)! Jason had registered for the Spelling Bee ...of Canada Regional Bee earlier this year, studied hard for about a week, but unfortunately the bee was cancelled due to COVID. Pivoting, Spelling Bee of Canada launched virtual Spelling Bees in October and Jason signed back up. After just spending two days reviewing the words, he competed and won first place in the Intermediate Division. While he says it was mostly luck, his past experience with math and English competitions may have prepared him to keep focused and not let the nerves get to him. He’s now headed (virtually) to the Spelling Bee of Canada National Championship Bee on November 29, 2020. Congratulations, Jason. You make us all proud!
