Saanich Gulf-Islands Conservatives 07.10.2020

I had sent this out as a letter to the editor earlier this month, but it wasn't published. Seems appropriate to post it hear with the Greens once again making noise about 'leader's courtesy' regarding today's by-election in Toronto Center. Dear Editor, Ms. May and the Greens are ‘slamming’ the other parties for running candidates against their new leader in a by-election. However, to do otherwise robs the voters of their democratic rights. Toronto Center was a Liberal rid...ing, going to the polls later this month. If other parties do not run a candidate, the voters in the riding of Toronto Center will have very different representation than they voted for less than a year ago. True, the Green Party did not run a candidate in the by-election against Mr. Singh in Burnaby South, however we need to be honest about the facts. In 2015, Burnaby South went NDP with 35% of the vote, the Liberals had 33%, and the Conservatives 27%. The Green Party received a mere 2% of the vote. It is self-serving for the Greens to claim ‘leader’s courtesy’ and sit out a by-election they could not be competitive in. The Greens did not have any reasonable prospect of wining in Burnaby South, and wisely chose to save their resources for the Nanaimo be-election (which they won) and the 2019 general election. Toronto Center is not a green seat, Morneau won in 2019 with 57% of the vote, the NDP were second, Conservatives third. Ms. Paul ran in that contest and received only 7% of the vote. Apologies to Ms. May, but in my opinion, to usurp the will of the 93% of the people who did not vote for Ms. Paul, by not providing the voters of Toronto Center alternative choices for their representative, would be an affront to democracy. Apologies I had meant to post this Wednesday in response to the confidence vote.
