The Shadowbox Theatre 03.01.2021

The Beauty Queen of Leenane by Martin McDonagh "shares the loneliness and isolation we’ve all been feeling but offers a bit of hopeful love and possible escape from our sorrows. We can see the finish line, we just need the right tool to finally get there. The most interesting theme for me is the complexity of family relationships. We all have those people in our families who we love because they are family, but the struggle to like them and accept who they are, while still protecting our own dignity and mental health, is difficult.

The Shadowbox Theatre 14.06.2020

Do people need to see theatre? No, said Potter. People DO need entertainment, diversions and art that makes them feel and think. Stories make excellent diversions and when it comes to storytelling, theatre is unique in that it can tell compelling stories so vividly that you feel sucked into their world. You feel the energy in the room. You laugh and gasp and cringe and hold your breath with others who are doing the same thing. There’s nothing else like it. No company, of any type, can expect to make it on their own. In addition to focusing on our own productions, we need to build positive relationships with other companies and local businesses thats what weve always aimed to do. [Prsas] role with the company will primarily be to research and seek out ways to work with other theatre companies and local businesses to mutual benefit. By working together, we can all lift each other up creatively and economically. Thank you, windsoriteDOTca - windsor's hyper-local news & culture for the great interview!

In our time of global crisis, Post Productions and The Shadowbox Theatre are bringing you Daily Retrospectives -- each day offers a look back at one of our prod...uctions -- or one of the factors that makes us who we are. Day 42: A Collaborator Spotlight on KRIS SIMIC! We became aware of Kris Simic's remarkable talents through her work with companies that performed at Sho Art, Spirit & Performance, so we set up a meeting to discuss the possibility of hiring her to work on our first production, Oleanna (April/May 2-17). She came prepared with a load of samples, a wealth of ideas, and a spirit eager to collaborate with others. We liked her immediately. Little did we know that this was the start of a three-year relationship that shows no signs of ceasing. Kris has designed the posters and programs for all 14 of our productions to date (plus two that are still upcoming). We wish we could show you images of al the brilliant programs she's designed for us. Alas, Facebook won't let us upload that much data! Instead, below you'll see all 14 posters. They're gorgeous, communicative, elegant works of art. Kris has this remarkable ability to take the verbal porridge that spills out of our heads, through our mouths, and make sense of it. We usually have a solid idea of what we want from a poster (and program) but, since we aren't artists, we have no ability to communicate that, much less bring it to life. So Kris patiently sits with us, listens as we try to describe the contents of our minds in inadequate, fumbled, verbiage -- and not only does she understand what we're conveying, she always finds a way to make it better than we'd envisioned. She creates original work rather than copies of what other companies have done or filled-in templates of stock designs purchased from publishers. The designs are HERS. Since that first meeting in the early winter of 2017, Kris' style has become an essential part of the Post Productions brand, an aesthetic sensibility that ties our productions together into a coherent whole. It's difficult for us to even imagine working with anyone else at this point, so tied is she to how we think about the "look" of Post Productions. And until Kris decides she's done with us, we've no intention of collaborating with anyone else on our posters and programs. After all, not only do we love her work, she's become a beloved friend as well.

The Shadowbox Theatre 10.01.2020

In our time of global crisis, Post Productionsand The Shadowbox Theatre are bringing you Daily Retrospectives -- each day offers a look back at one of our produ...ctions -- or one of the factors that makes us who we are. Day 40: Martin McDonagh's THE PILLOWMAN THE FUN FACTS EDITION (Nov/Dec 2019)! You can view the trailer created by Mitchell Branget here: http://www.postproductionswindsor.ca/pillowman.html The Pillowman is the longest play we've ever produced. The second-longest (Equus) was also directed by Michael K. Potter. Read nothing into this. The principal cast -- Eric Branget, Joey Wright, Simon du Toit, and Fay Lynn -- was selected far earlier than is customary for us, because we needed to record the dialogue for the films and trailer. This way the film-makers could edit to the pace and rhythms of the actors' voices as they actually read the stories they would be reciting onstage. Wright joined rehearsals later than the others because he was working on Autopsy (Oct 2019). A few months prior, he directed Reefer Madness at Korda. 2019 was a busy year for him. We held auditions later for the child actors who appear in the live-action films, who ended up being Maria Hausmann and Angelo Lucier. The self-tape that young Angelo sent in was terrific .. . and his screams haunt us to this day. ;-) The key to Du Toit's characterization is that his Tupolski knows he is a violent man who struggles constantly to contain his rage and corresponding impulse to hurt others. He is also racist. There was some concern at one point that the very fake, very Jerry Lewis, "Asian" accent Tupolski used to tell his story in act three might offend. But, since Tupolski was the unwitting butt of his own joke, the bit was funny, and it fit his character, it stayed. Du Toit printed off all of Katurian's stories and had them organized in Tupolski's binders. Branget was incredibly committed to his character from the beginning. He decided Katurian would be represented by an owl, and you could see that in his movements - especially in the neck. He had played Michal in another production of The Pillowman several years ago and, in fact, the ears Tupolski and Ariel use to scare him in act one were created for that earlier production. Wright put a lot of work into getting Michal's twitch just perfect -- but every night, by the end of act two he was exhausted and in pain from keeping up that twitch for an hour straight. Wright also decided that Michal knows his brother is going to kill him when he lies down for his "nap". So he played that moment with a subtly heartbreaking flicker of resignation -- and even acceptance. Michal's decided Katurian no longer loves him; so he has nothing left to lose Shortly before the production opened, we did what came to be called The Irish Run -- a rehearsal in which the cast performed the entire play as a broad, silly comedy . . . and in which most of them adopted Irish accents (more or less). The goal was to loosen things up and rediscover the comedy that becomes invisible when you've rehearsed something many, many times. It worked ! Thanks to the Irish Run we made several decisions that brought more comedy and some fresh energy into the show. The cast did a full Italian run of the play every night before doors opened. Potter tends to direct in moods and images. One of the first images that crept into his mind when he read the script was Katurian sitting in the interrogation room, frightened and confused, wearing a blindfold adorned with gigantic cartoonish eyes crudely drawn with sharpie. So that's the first thing the audience saw in this production. Potter investigated suffocation, and timed Michal's murder accordingly. The length of time it takes Katurian to kill him, and the sequence of Michal's physiological reactions, is roughly what would happen in a real pillow suffocation. It feels longer than it is when you're watching it play out in front of you. Lynn and Potter played all three sets of parents in the films - Little Jesus birth parents, her adoptive parents, and Katuriian and Michal's parents. The wig used for Little Jesus' adoptive mother was borrowed from Kordazone Theatre. It's commonly known as the "Gemma wig" because it looks like Gemma Eva's hair. Set designer Matthew Burgess and Lynn built the torture device prop out of old toasters from True West (Oct/Nov 2017). Potter gave Burgess a selection of quotes to choose from for the bloody graffiti on the cell walls, most of them from the works of Vaclav Havel (an inspiration on the play) and Grant Morrison's Arkham Asylum. Rob Tymec graciously loaned us the cot used in the film, the mattress of which was also used for Michal and Katurian's cell. Lynn may or may not have taken several naps on it. Tupolski and Ariel's uniforms were loaned to us by the fine people of University Players (Windsor). Burgess and Lynn drew an illustration for each story mentioned in the play, which were all found in the program - chronologically, in the order in which they're mentioned. They include two stories that are mentioned but never shared in the play: The Face Basement and The Shakespeare Room. Kris Simic designed the program to resemble an old storybook. The process to create the five animated films was painstaking, arduous work that began nearly nine months before the production opened. We began with a discussion about how the stories should look and feel, and Potter gave some reference points (including Cailou!). Then animator Kieran Potterdid some concept art, followed by a meeting with Burgess and composer/digital artist Dave Nisbet to discuss the concept art and determine the overall aesthetics of not only the animations but the promotional campaign and poster as well. Then Kieran created storyboards. When these were approved after some feedback and discussion he started animating. There were several obstacles and delays, many of them due to familiar frustrations of technology. The final animated story was received the day before the play opened. Potter was a little on edge. When we filmed The Writer and the Writer's Brother (thanks to Mitchell Branget), Lynn was so uncomfortable gagging him that his mother (Kris Lucier) had to do it. The shoot was a lot of fun and Angelo was a trouper, professional and cooperative and easygoing. He loved the makeup Mitchell gave him to look injured. His mom was in the room the entire shoot, proudly taking photographs. A little detail: The device the boy's parents use on him is the same device used on Katurian. Mitchell came up with all sorts of great ideas for the shoot, such as having Potter drag the drill along Angelou's leg. The bedroom scene was shot at the same location we shot Little Jesus, and on the same day -- a lovely farm belonging to the family of Mitchell Timothy Bouchard. The trickiest part for Lynn and Potter was stifling laughter when the other person was pretending to be suffocated. Maria is a joy to work with. By the end of the shoot for Little Jesus, Maria was absolutely covered in fake blood and spirit gum. The spirit gum annoyed her more than the blood (which she found tasty). Everything but the final shot was filmed at the farm; the final shot in which she's buried in the coffin was created on the Shadowbox stage. Also: we had to film the outdoor scenes in between sporadic bouts of rain. Also: Potter was terrified he might accidentally hit Maria with the cat-o-nine-tails, even though there was at least ten feet of clearance between them. He is not in the habit of whipping people. Burgess created the props used in the films as well as the live play. The corpse of young Michal was made from one of Potter's Halloween decorations and liquid latex. For Little Jesus he made the cross, the cat o nine tails, and the spear. Lynn made the barbed wire crown, following Burgess' instructions. In addition to creating the live-action films, Mitchell was the on-set makeup artist, he made the prosthetic arm that the nails are hammered into, he concocted tasty fake blood and the sugar glass, and much more. He's a multi-talented guy. Nusbet was invited to work on The Pillowman because we'd had such a wonderful experience working with him on Equus (Oct 2018). The music he created is used to differentiate between "real" and "fantasy" stories during the play, to cue the audience into the eventual climax. The photos used in the promotional campaign were true collaborations. The photographs themselves were taken by our frequent collaborators The Headshot Company. Then Nisbet manipulated them digitally according to the aesthetic we'd worked out, adding backgrounds and adjusting the colour palette (each character has a different palette). Then we used three copies of each image to create slideshows in which creatures from Katurian's stories moved into the frame and the characters' faces became Pillowman faces. All of those drawings were created by Burgess. Animator Kieran Potter's mother -- Karin Wiens -- made videos to help Maria and Lynn learn the necessary sign language for the final moments of act 3. At Branget's suggestion, we installed a mirror at the back of the auditorium so the cast could see what was projected on the screen, thus making it easier for them to coordinate their words and movements with the films. The Pillowman holds the Post Productions record for the most walkouts -- more even than Equus and AFCP. The decision to create and sell t-shirts using some of the art Kieran and Lynn had created gave us an opportunity to finally work with the Shadowbox's longtime neighbors, Graphix Plus.
