An Announcement from the Shakespeare by the Sea Festival Board: Thank you! On behalf of the Board of Directors and Staff of the Shakespeare by the Sea Festival, I am announcing today that Paul Rowe, who has lent us his talent and leadership as Artistic Director (AD) of the Shakespeare by the Sea (SBTS) Festival for the past three years, is moving on. Paul’s love of Shakespeare, his commitment to nurturing talent, and his leadership will be missed. He has built the Shakespeare... by the Sea Festival into a stronger, more resilient organization on a solid financial footing. We are so grateful and wish him nothing but the best. As AD, Paul brought to the stage As You Like It (2018), The Comedy of Errors (2019), and an online version of Pericles Prince of Tyre (2020). Before taking on the role as Festival AD, Paul directed The Tempest (2017), All’s Well That Ends Well (2014), and Cymbeline (2013) for the Festival. His work as AD didn’t stop with delivering a season. He worked with the board and staff to increase our audience, secure new community sponsors, refresh our governance and organizational structure, and with his partner in crime Sandra Mills, our General Manager did the myriad things that need to be done to keep a Community Theatre thriving. Paul will be staying with SBTS Festival to help us transition to a new AD for the 2021 Season. In the coming weeks we will start the search for our new AD. Paul, to quote the Bard: "I can no other answer make, but thanks / And thanks, and ever thanks." Meghan Keating Chair of the Board Shakespeare by the Sea Festival

Fall 2020 Workshop Series presents Designing for Theatre with Alison Helmer. October 10th, 1pm - 3pm. REGISTER NOW: https://forms.gle/5PvZCK3bAiEhMA1eA Decription: What is the role of design in theatre? How do abstract ideas become what I see onstage? Find out more about the power of design, and why it is so integral to the theatrical and performative experience. Uncover how the poetry of space and character can help shape the production and the audience’s experience. In this... workshop, you will delve into the inner workings of designing for theatre, and discover it’s exciting and endless possibilities. You will also be given the chance to apply some of the concepts you learn in a short creative exercise. Whether you’re considering design as a career, or just looking to know more about what goes on behind the scenes, this workshop is for you. Alison Helmer is a multidisciplinary artist who has been deeply and continuously influenced by her studies and experience working on the east coast in Newfoundland. Her studies began in the technical theatre production program at Grenfell College, during which time she spent two season as Head of Design at Beyond the Overpass Theatre Co, and also worked as Costume and Set designer for Rising Tide Theatre’s 2019 season. With an in-depth knowledge of and interest in historical costuming and costume construction, she approaches the world of both set and costume design through a lens of fantasy, history, and the tradition of storytelling. She is excited by Theatre that pushes the boundaries between conventional and experimental, and that seeks to fulfil our human search for truth, escape, and shared connection. In her final year of the Scenography program at the National Theatre School of Canada, she has been able to explore Restoration costumes with a contemporary twist on Nell Gwynn directed by Krista Jackson, as well as the costumes for NTS’s 2019 creation project with directors Zack Fraser and Ariana Bardessono. This summer, she was fortunate to be able to return to Newfoundland, working with Shakespeare by the Sea on their virtual production of Pericles, Prince of Tyre.

What better scene to end our Shakespearean Shorts series with than a celebration of caterwauling! Full of hilarity, music, and plots of pranks, this Twelfth Night scene is a pure celebration (no matter how Malvolio feels about it). Grab a drink and sing along! Cheers to another great season!
