Shakespeare Firefighter's Association 29.12.2020

Nothing like taking a 30 foot enclosed trailer full of Toys, Gift cards , and donated money to the House of Blessing in Stratford. A heartfelt thank you to the individuals, businesses, and other community groups that donated to this great cause. The Shakespeare Firefighters Association is looking forward to the 2021 Toy Drive. Next year we may be adding a non-perishable Food drive. God bless you all. Stay healthy, and stay safe. Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and all the best to you and your family in the New Year.

Just a reminder that this coming Saturday (Dec 12th) is the last day to drop toys off at the Shakespeare Fire Hall for our annual toy drive. Someone will be there between 9 and noon to collect. #dontbelate

Perth East Fire Department is hiring. Shakespeare Station currently has vacancies. If you have the drive, ability, and availability seriously consider applying.

The Shakespeare Firefighters Associations annual Christmas Toy Drive will be happening this year, but slightly differently than in the past. Donations can be dropped off at our fire hall between 9am and noon on the last Saturday of November and the first two Saturdays of December. There will also be a collection box at Akins Brewer Lumber if you want to make your donation through the week. Cash donations or gift cards can also be given and we will deliver along with our collection of toys. We are grateful for everyone's past support and look forward to another successful toy drive this year!

Today we have lowered our flag to half mast in memory of a long time firefighter and former Station Chief, Gerry Witzel. Gerry served on the North and South Easthope Fire Department, which became the Perth East Fire Department as townships amalgamated, for just over 25 years, eight of those years as Shakespeare's Station Chief. Dedicated service on any rural fire department can prove to be challenging at the best of times for a multitude of reasons, but stepping up to become Chief during the uncertain times of township amalgamation, which brings with it increased paperwork, red tape and all sorts of new obstacles, says much for Gerry's character. He has been missed on our department since his retirement and he will be missed by his family and friends with his passing. Rest in peace Gerry.

Contrary to what Hollywood might make us believe, structure fires are never a scene where a rescuer can run in and avoid the flames here and there with a clear view of the entire area. You. Can't. See. Anything. And it's HOT so we stay low. It's called "search and rescue" because we are literally searching. How do you practice such a skill? You can white out your mask and create an obstacle course, since that is what a blackened house would actually be like. Even our Deputy Chief got into it last night, demonstrating how to fit through a tight space. Great practice! #searchandrescue #blackout
