What's it like running a Shakespeare company if you aren't a die-hard Shakespeare fan? Well...ask our Co-Artistic Director, Eva Barrie: "There’s a running joke in the company that I hate shakespeare, which iskind of true. It’s not that I HATE it, but I think the unquestioned worship of the text/person is very harmful. What’s exciting for me about shakespeare and classical work, is that it can be a massive creative playground. When you approach the pieces as found text and w...ith creative audacity, there’s so much possibility. Working with Ruff has given me the opportunity to explore and surround myself with people who may feel that same helpful irreverence." We are accepting applications for the artistic director position until November 1st! Do you think Artistic Director jobs are only for artists with a directing background? Current Co-Artistic Director Kaitlyn Riordan may make you think again! "Not being a director, I didn't think Artistic Direction made sense for me. Thankfully, I got over that. I've learned so much being in this role, it has challenged me to engage with every element of theatre making and a year from now, when I leave this role, I'll be a much fuller theatre artist than when I came into it. ...I've also developed a ton of skills that I never imagined I would tackle. This role has been hugely empowering and I encourage anyone interested in artistic leadership to leave your doubts at the door and consider what you do have to offer."
