Dear friends, acquaintances and all who live for freedom A call out for action I am working on a Group of 5 sponsorship to bring a Somali family of 6 ( mom, dad, 4 kids aged 3 mos- 14) to Toronto. ... I am looking to raise an initial amount of $22,000.00, which is required in order to submit and process the application and a total of $50,000- 75,000.00 over the next year or so for travel and to house and maintain the family for their first year in Toronto. I am partnering with St Andrew by the lake (Toronto Island) and Weston Park Baptist Churches. I met Abdikadir 20 years ago when I was working with Somali families in Toronto and had the opportunity to work in Dadaab, Kenya. This tiny desert watering hole was transformed into a massive hub for refugees as thousands fled war and famine in nearby countries. Abdikadir fled Somalia as an 11 year old after his parents (journalists) and sister were killed in Mogadishu. (My son Jeremy is 12. I cannot imagine this horror for a child.) He has been in the camp for 29 years as his country remains unsafe and Kenya restricts the movement of refugees. These people have been forgotten.
