Virginia Woolf was born in England in 1882. Although she's written in almost every style imaginable novels, essays, autobiographies, letters, short fictions she's most famous for her non-linear narrative style. You might know some of her notable works: A Room of One’s Own (1929), To the Lighthouse (1927) and Mrs. Dalloway (1925). Our production of FLUSH is an adaptation, by Tim Carroll, of her 1933 novella, Flush: A Biography. . .... . Quote Source: March 18, 1925 entry from "The Diary of Virginia Woolf: 1925-1930". It's always fun to see an actor switch from one costume to the next in a blink of the eye. Remember Kimberley Rampersad's quick change in "Heat Wave" from last year's HOLIDAY INN ? Iconic. Quick changes can cause quite the flurry backstage and often take multiple people to make them happen. That's the magic of theatre. ... . . . [Image description: Slide 1: A photo of Kristopher Bowman wearing a white tank top and tying a bowtie is on a pink background. QUICK CHANGE is written in brown font behind him with the letter H hidden by the photo. In the top right of the image, there is a purple Shaw Festival logo. In the bottom right of the photo, Quick change: A very fast costume change in which a performer exchanges one costume for another. is written in white font. Below the text, there is a white arrow. Slide 2: On this slide, the quote Quick changes usually happen backstage. Depending on the complexity of the quick change, the actor can do it on their own or with the help of a dresser or an assistant stage manager. When a show has many complicated quick changes, a quick change rehearsal may take place. This gives everyone the opportunity to rehearse the quick changes in the production. is written in white font on a pink background. There is a purple Shaw Logo in the top right corner.]

This season’s production of DESIRE UNDER THE ELMS was written by Eugene O’Neill in 1924. Eugene O’Neill is the only American playwright to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. He received the award in 1936 for the power, honesty and deep-felt emotions of his dramatic works, which embody an original concept of tragedy. Creating theatre involves many moving parts, and with these moving parts comes many unique terms, jargon and definitions. Are you curious what some of these sayings mean? The Shaw 101 is an ongoing infographics series explaining theatre terminology and how they relate to the Shaw Festival. We’re starting off with a pretty well-known term: Dress Rehearsal.... Do you have any dress rehearsal stories worth sharing? (We know there are lots out there ) Let us know in the comments below! [Image Descriptions Slide 1: A purple background with a transparent image of the ensemble of "Brigadoon." In front of this background, Kristi Frank in a full costume, dancing and kicking her leg out. At the bottom is the definition of "Dress Rehearsal": "The first full rehearsal of a show with all technical elements including costumes and wigs." Slide 2: A purple background with a transparent image of the ensemble of "Brigadoon." In front of this background is a further explanation of "Dress Rehearsal": "The goal of a dress rehearsal is to make it from the beginning of the play to the end without stopping." "Sometimes dress rehearsals can have an invited audience or sometimes there is no audience." "Occasionally, when costume changes don’t go according to plan, we pause the rehearsal to complete the costume change." In the bottom right corner is a 2021 Shaw logo in pink.]

Living by the Lake Living By The Lake is an ongoing photo journal series, created by Andrew Broderick, that looks into the lives of various company members here at the Shaw Festival (while socially distancing, of course). These photos were captured during the summer of 2020. This week's featured artist is Cameron Grant.... How do you make your house a home? "It's a mindset for me. I move around a lot, so when I get to a new space I say "this is home." This is where I rest my head, this is where I am safe, where I find comfort." Favourite daily ritual? "Morning coffee. There is something about a french press that makes it so much better. Followed by 30 minutes of reading." It's my first time visiting NOTL, where should I go? "Get away from the mainstreet and find some nature. I love walking through "The Commons" or following the heritage trails. This town is filled with so much natural history it is both overwhelming and settling." In three words, what does the future look like to you? "Maddening and Beautiful."
