About Shear Wizard Dan Courcelles (the Shear Wizard, that's me!) is a man with a fascination for making things sharp. Dan was trained in Florida by John Kuipers of Wicked Sharp Shears, one of the top master sharpeners in North America with over 20 years of experience. Shear Wizard uses the Hira-To flat hone to sharpen shears the way the Japanese craftsmen intended them to be sharpened. The Hira-To is able to match any angle perfectly and convex Japanese shears back to like... new condition. A progression of honing pads is used to establish and refine a new edge, then the inside of the shear is honed on a Japanese water stone, resulting in a razor sharp, smooth cutting action. German style shears, thinners, texturizers and chunkers are refined to the same quality edge. The shears are then tested on a single ply of wet tissue paper and human hair to ensure a perfect cut. The Hira-To is able to sharpen shears without heating up the blades and ruining the temper, resulting in a more refined, less brittle and longer lasting edge.
