Love is in the air . Valentine's Day is a good day to remind everyone to be weary of Romance Scams. Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre has seen an increase in online scams that target individuals in isolation due to the lock downs and travel restrictions. This includes fraudsters targeting people looking for companionship or love through dating sites and social media. In 2020 alone, Canadians lost more than $18.5 million to this scam.... In Romance Scams, fraudsters will gain the trust of the victim by carrying on a relationship over a period of time. This can include displays of affection, such as, sending gifts, flowers and tokens to prove that their feelings are genuine. In many cases, the fraudster will claim to be professional business people or military personnel that are travelling or stationed abroad. Once trust is gained, fraudsters will begin to ask for financial assistance for reasons like urgent situations (e.g. a sick family member or to complete a business transaction) or to return to the country (e.g. plane ticket, lawyer fees, or duty & taxes). Warning Signs Attempts to meet in person never happen, there’s always an excuse why they can’t meet. Fraudsters want to develop a quick relationship with you. Be suspicious when someone you haven’t met professes their love to you. Be cautious of an individual that claims to live close to you but is working overseas. This is a set up for the fraudster to provide you with many reasons to ask for money. If you are asked to accept a payment from someone you’ve met online and send a part of the funds back to them or someone else - don’t do it! A growing trend being noticed is the fraudster asking you to invest in a new business venture or cryptocurrency. How to protect yourself Never, under any circumstances, send money to someone you’ve never met. Protect your personal and financial information. Do not share personal or financial information with anyone you’ve only met online. Never send intimate photos or videos of yourself. They could be used to blackmail you. Do a revers image search of any photos you are sent to see if they have been taken from a stock photo site or someone else’s online profile. Do not travel to another country to meet someone for the first time. This is often a setup to get you to partake in criminal activities with risks of injury, arrest or even death. If you think you or someone you know has been a victim of fraud, please contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or report online at www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca.

The flags at the Shelburne Town Hall have been lowered to half mast, to honour Provincial Constable Marc Hovingh of the Little Current OPP Detatchment. PC Hovingh was a 28 year veteran of the OPP, and was killed in the line of duty on November 19, 2020, while responding to a call on Manitoulin Island. Our thoughts are with PC Hovingh's family and friends, our brothers and sisters in the OPP, all first responders and everyone who is affected by this tragedy. #HeroesInLife #endofwatch

COVID-19 Update from Mayor Wade Mills November 13, 2020 (LATE BREAKING UPDATE - Wellington Dufferin Guelph will be moving into the Orange ("Restrict") level as ...of Monday, November 16th at 12:01 am) Ontario has 1,396 new cases being reported today which is down slightly from yesterday’s daily record of 1,575. The seven-day rolling Provincial average of new cases is clearly showing a concerning upward trajectory. Province-wide, our cumulative reported totals now sit at 91,180 cases, 76,238 resolved cases, and 3,312 reported deaths which include 19 additional fatalities occurring with the past 24-hour reported period. Within the Wellington Dufferin Guelph Public Health region, we have also been seeing new case numbers on the rise over the past number of days. There were 10 new cases reported with the past 24 hours bringing us to 100 active cases but luckily only one current hospitalization. Within Dufferin County the increases have been less dramatic than in the other parts of our public health region. It is reported that three new cases have been added within the past 24 hours. There are currently 23 active cases being reported within Dufferin but no hospitalizations. Under the new Provincial tiered colour-coding system, our Wellington Dufferin Guelph Public Health region is currently in the Yellow (Protect) level. With the rise of new cases however, we are moving closer and closer to the Orange (Restrict) level which, as the name implies, would bring additional restrictions to local residents and establishments. The Premier has announced today that the thresholds for each of the various colour levels will be lowered to reflect the increases in cases. To that point, new modelling from the Province yesterday highlighted just how bad this current second wave could get. The data is suggesting that we could quite possibly see Provincial daily case counts reach 3,500 by the end of November and 6,500 by the middle of December. Another concerning point to consider locally is that Headwaters Healthcare Centre is currently at 100% capacity WITHOUT having any COVID-related patients admitted. A number of hospitals further south of us are already well over capacity. For those who would still question the gravity of this pandemic or otherwise seek to downplay its seriousness, the facts simply do not support the proposition. I cannot stress enough that the threat of COVID-19 is, and continues to be real and present. The modelling data that we are now seeing should be shocking and it should serve as a stark reminder that we are not over this in fact, the worst may very well be yet to come. Despite the inevitable fatigue that sets in over living with the current restrictions, we must all remain as vigilant now as we were in the beginning. We must also think beyond our own self-interest and consider the health and well-being of those around us, particularly those members of our community who are at increased vulnerability. Let’s not give up yet. Be well. Be responsible. Be mindful. Be kind. Mayor Wade Mills

Today, we remember those who fought for our freedom. Thank you to all the veterans who put themselves in harms way, and to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Lest we forget.
