Meet Mark Maftei, the Executive Director and Research Lead at Raincoast Education Society. We recently interviewed him about our shorebird research. Watch wh...at happens when he gets distracted by a rare bird. Typical. Mark has been with Raincoast Education Society for 3 years, leading our team to promote a sustainable future for Clayoquot and Barkley Sounds. Mark has a lifelong passion for nature and the outdoors. Growing up, he divided his time between paddling the lakes and rivers of northern Ontario and his studies at the University of Toronto. After completing his undergraduate degree, he decided to visit Bamfield for a couple of weeks and ended up staying almost a decade after falling in love with Barkley Sound. During this time he took a short detour to St. John’s Newfoundland where he completed an Msc. in biology at Memorial University focused on High Arctic gulls. Mark has worked for a number of universities and government agencies in both Canada and the US. Before joining the RES, he worked for Environment Canada studying colonial seabirds along the BC coast. Mark’s passion for birds has taken him around the globe, from Ellesmere Island in the Canadian High Arctic to South Georgia Island in the Southern Ocean. He has spent 15 years working in some of the most remote and spectacular places on earth, but always eagerly looked forward to returning back home to the coast where he spends most of his free time surfing, fishing, or just enjoying life in the most beautiful place on earth. On September 19th & 20th 2020 Surfrider Pacific Rim teamed up with BC Parks, Maaqtusiis Hahoulthee Stewardship Society, and students from Maaqtusiis School to c...lean the coastline of Vargas island. After being welcomed into Ahousaht territory, we set to work removing debris from Ahous Bay, Three Fingers, Surf Beach, Medallion, Mel's, and Dick and Jane's beaches. THE SKINNY: 2 days, 25 volunteers, 8.5km of shoreline scoured, 1786lbs of debris removed! (That's just a bit heavier than your average adult giraffe!!!) A large proportion of the debris we found is attributed to the fishing and acquaculture industry, including 131 buoys, 2 barrels, 3/4 supersac of rope, 1/4 supersac of fishing line, and a huge, heavy fishing net that had to be dug out of the sand and cut into sections to be removed. There were also 59 assorted smaller items related to this industry including flashers, lures, and broken oyster seed trays. However, the biggest trash trend for the weekend was 460 SINGLE USE PLASTIC BEVERAGE BOTTLES! Over the past five years, we have removed >50,000 of these from the beaches of the Pacific Rim, which is why this fall we're launching a campaign to "Take Back the Tap" - encouraging individuals and businesses to ditch the single use plastic water bottle! We aim to ultimately get this item added to municipal regulation of single use plastics. We also removed 667 other assorted single use plastic items including straws, bags, cups, and cutlery - many of which were included in the recently announced federal plastic ban! Whilst this is only a very small step in the right direction, we're still celebrating this as a huge win for the beaches and oceans! WEIRD TRASH TRENDS: 4 light bulbs 5 hard hats 6 LEFT shoes 1 incredibly creepy dismembered baby doll. Any theories on how these items made it onto the remote beaches of Clayoquot Sound? Let us know your thoughts! We are forever grateful to our incredible volunteer team who spend their days off getting up before the sun, braving all weathers to wade through rivers, scrable over rocks, and shimmy over logs to drag, roll, and heave debris off of the beach. You're our heros. We're also incredibly grateful to BC Parks for funding this latest remote cleanup effort, to Ceara Salvage for their masterful debris pick-up (Marcel is a magician), Common Loaf for keeping us fuelled with yummy food, and MHSS for all their support. It takes a village - and we have a great one. Photos by Nicole Holman #protectwhatyoulove #loveyourbeachclean
