THREE REASONS TO PURSUE PMP CERTIFICATION by Urbain Kengni, MBA, PMP, M.Eng. The PMP (Project Management Professional) Certification is designed for professionals and managers aiming to direct projects from the strategic to the operational level in order to meet the goals and the vision of an organization. There are three compelling reasons why I believe a professional (project manager or an aspiring project manager) should pursue the PMP. 1- The PMP proves that you have ...Project Management experience: a. In order to apply to take the PMP exam you are required to have attained a certain amount of experience in project management: 60 months (7,500 hours) if you have an associate’s degree (or the global equivalent), and 36 months (4,500 hours) if you have a bachelor’s degree. b. PMP formalizes your hands-on knowledge through a structured curriculum and lends you additional professional credibility as a project manager with both practical experience and theoretical knowledge of standards and best practices. c. The PMP certification formally lends Project Managers the credentials needed to take their careers to the next level or transition to a different industry. 2- Employers value and require more and more PMP holders in Canada and around the world: a. Canadian employment Indeed.ca data: 704 job postings mentioned the PMP as a requirement or a strong asset between September 9th and September 24th 2014 (15 days). b. PMP would provide you with a competitive advantage as the certification is sought after by large and global corporations such as KPMG, PwC, FedEx, Boeing, Bank of Canada, RBC and other banking institutions (with salaries averaging around $100K). 3- Project Managers have a major impact on the economy: a. One-fifth of the world’s GDP, or more than $12 trillion, is spent on projects of all kind. b. Several multinationals and governments have chosen to adopt Project Management Institute (PMI) standards in the management of significant projects, small and large. In Canada, examples of such companies include TD Bank, Ericsson, and construction firms. c. Ethics and professionalism are at the heart of the PMP: a professional with the certification agrees to follow a code of conduct. Any instance of non-compliance with the code will potentially lead to the member losing his/her certification. Hence, given recent ethical scandals that have shaken the global economy, PMP can help a candidate build trust with a potential employer. See more
