Sheridan Athletic Therapy Clinic 07.11.2020

In honor of our last official week during National Athletic Therapy Month. We would like to highlight the women that are currently working in the Sheridan Athletic Therapy Clinic during their summer internship. These women are all fourth year Students at Sheridan for their Honours Bachelor of Applied Health Sciences (Athletic Therapy). Brett and Lauren have both worked at Humber College this past year as Student ATs in their clinic. Lauren has worked along side the York Regi...on Soccer Assoc. and York9 Developmental program. Brett has been working with Cheer Evolution covering Major Cheer competitions such as World’s Faceoff and Ontario National Championship. Haleigh and Dana have both worked at Seneca College in their Varsity Clinic. Dana has worked exclusively with Ontario Sr. B Lacrosse and the Arena Lacrosse League. Haleigh has been working with volleyball teams at Camp Madawaska, Halton Minor Midget Hockey, and is a first responder for a Motor Cycle Training Course. These are just some of the amazing women that are studying within the Athletic Therapy field! Sheridan’s AT program is filled with many influential women that graduate and become CATA certified every year. FUN FACT: Did you know within the Athletic Therapy Profession, 60% of ATs are women? We hope that everyone has been enjoying our Appreciation Posts and we hope it offers some inspiration to the younger generations and that this enables all women to pursue the career of their dreams. Athletic Therapists’ enjoy the fact that our job is to help you help yourself! Some advice we have for individuals with acute injuries, in order to help yourself and care for yourself before you are able to get in to see your athletic therapist; For acute injuries, we recommend the PIER protocol. P= pressure, I=ice, E= elevation, R= rest. Pressure during the day such as a tensor bandage can be effective to limit swelling in an area (refrain from using pressure at night).Use I...ce until the area becomes numb, and elevating the injury site above the heart during the day and at night helps to keep swelling from settling into area. Rest allows the tissue to heal and prevents further injury. RememberPain is the body’s way of telling you something is wrong (listen to your body, you know it best). This protocol works best to help mitigate swelling/inflammation and help to alleviate pain. The goal of PIER is to ensure that swelling is directed back towards the trunk, a decrease in swelling will put less pressure on nerves around the area of injury (which can cause some of your pain). Decreasing the swelling around the injury site will allow the body to move naturally, which will prevent further injury or other complications of the initial injury. This protocol works best as a combined unit, using all the elements together will help the healing process so you can start your road to recovery! #athletictherapy #sportinjury #getbacktoyourgame #PIER #sheridanshoutout #CATA #OATA #NATM19 #ATproud #begreAT #whateveryourfinishline See more

This week we would like to bring your attention to the role of injury prevention and recognition which Athletic Therapists (AT) provide for the many athletes during indoor and outdoor sporting events. AT’s are often seen on the sidelines for the aid of athletes during games and practices. We would like to emphasize the importance of AT’s attending games and practices because of the major role for emergency response and their ability to help reduce and manage traumatic injurie...s. AT’s specialize in observing an athlete’s functional movements, while having an in depth understanding of each athlete’s history of injury and general health information, so they can accommodate to the injury appropriately. AT’s also determine when it is safe for athletes to return to play after injury by evaluating range of motion, strength and functional movement. AT’s are also educated in recognition of concussion signs and symptoms after direct and indirect impacts. They also assist in providing concussion education, management and safe return to play protocol with medical doctor clearance.
