Co-Parenting Tips for Responding to Your Child's Resistance

The Art and Science of Dispute Resolution 17.04.2022

Sometimes divorce and separation can significantly affect children. A Justice of the Court of Queen's Bench recently recommended this amazing FREE program during a Court-led mediation, so we thought we should pass along this information as it might help assist in co-parenting strategies. Triple P is a parenting program, but it doesn’t tell you how to be a parent. It’s more like a toolbox of ideas. You choose the strategies you need. You choose the way you want to use them. It’s all about making Triple P work for you in the best interests of the children! https://www.triplep-parenting.ca/alb-en/triple-p/

How does the current COVID-19 crisis affect support obligations with MEP? The Maintenance Enforcement Program (MEP) recognises COVID-19 may impact a payors’ ability to meet their court ordered child support obligations. Similarly, it is recognised recipients are also impacted by COVID-19, and still have monthly obligations for the child(ren). Therefore payors making no payment is not an option. To assist payors, the MEP will offer a temporary payment arrangement for less th...an the ordered amount or a temporary decrease in their current payment arrangement. This applies to payors contacting MEP looking for assistance during the pandemic due to loss of income as a result of COVID-19 diagnosis, self-isolation, loss of job (or reduced hours) or impact of childcare/school closure. Assistance to these payors will be temporary, and it is the responsibility of these payors to keep in touch with MEP month-to-month. If you have payor clients that are impacted by COVID-19, it is important they contact their MEP Case Officer for assistance as soon as they know they will need it. For the latest news, please see the following website: https://www.alberta.ca/mep-latest-news.aspx

ALTERNATIVE DISPUTE RESOLUTION, CONSENT ORDERS AND APPLICATIONS TO ENFORCE ARBITRATION AWARDS Mar 31, 2020 In the context of the current suspension of hearings except those that are an emergency or urgent, the Court is encouraging counsel and the public to access alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, including mediation and arbitration. These processes will reduce delays in resolving family, civil and commercial disputes in light of the backlog that will seriously challenge timely scheduling of these matters in the Court once the suspension is lifted. Effective March 30, 2020 the Court will process all Consent Orders resolving any matter over which the Court has jurisdiction, including non-urgent matters and Consent Orders to enforce Mediation or Arbitration Awards, by email or fax in accordance with the Court’s Announcement

Alberta Justice has suspended all non-emergent Court hearings currently scheduled from March 16th to March 27th. The Court has advised there will be further updates posted on their website on or before March 25th, however, in the mean time, Emergency matters will still proceed. Emergency Court matters are considered to be those in which serious consequences to persons or harm to property may arise if the hearing does not proceed. Details can be found on the Alberta Court...’s website at https://www.albertacourts.ca//covid-19-suspension-of-sitti. **If your matter falls within this category and you require immediate assistance with an emergency Court application, please contact us by email at [email protected]. We will be monitoring our emails as our office attendance permits. To our clients who have non-emergent Court matters that were scheduled to be heard between March 16th and March 27th, your applications have been adjourned sine die, which means it has been postponed. It is important to note this does not mean your Court application is no longer active. This simply means that once the Courts re-open, your matter will have to be put back on the Court schedule for a later date. Given the volume of Court proceedings that will need to be rescheduled, we ask that you please continue to be patient while the Court navigates their way through these extreme measures and assesses the impact this pandemic will have on our Judicial system. Thank you, and stay healthy!

It’s a different world out there, and our children and teenagers face different social challenges than what we adults faced as teenagers. Sometimes these challenges can become exacerbated and more difficult to handle in a split/blended family situation if there is conflict in the home. Let your teens know if they need help now, this is a great resource to turn to. https://www.facebook.com/112592188826071/posts/2209163599168909/

On behalf of our Collaborative Association’s Programming and Education Committee, and with generous sponsorship from KRP and the Palix Foundation, the members are pleased to offer to our membership, their clients and the community a special screening of Screenagers: Growing up in the Digital Age. This documentary was created by Dr. Delaney Ruston who was curious about the effects of screen time on her own children and decided to explore her findings in a digestible and acce...ssible manner. This event is open to our membership and is also geared toward the families we work with and the larger community. The information provided is interesting, easy to digest and provides insight into how the screen time we are all partaking in is affecting our brains and our relationships. The Palix Foundation will be showing a short video prior to the main film and we will be hosting a Q&A with two Child Psychologists (Brandi Smith and Diane Priebe) after the screening. Attached you will find the poster and other information for the public screening, to be held on October 20th at the UofA Law Faculty. Please share with friends, and family as we hope to have a great turnout and provide some insight into a growing challenge in our families and relationships. Plus, there’ll be popcorn! Additional information and resources, including tools for families to use at home, can be found on the Screenagers website: www.screenagersmovie.com. For a piece mentioning the film on PBS News Hour, please see: http://www.screenagersmovie.com./press/ Please RSVP so we have an idea of numbers and can make sure everyone will be comfortable.
