Yes, it has been lonely at times and I miss nothing more than to hug the people that I love, but amongst this crazy period, I have found that being alone, reflecting, assessing, reconnecting, and adjusting has been so valuable for my self-development. I had forgotten to make time for sel...f-care, setting healthy boundaries, and accepting that in order for me to be the best version of myself, it's ok to sometimes walk alone to get there. Walking alone might be scary but it is the best way to become strong! I recommend each of you to take 10-15 minutes every day to reflect and connect with yourself! 2020 was a very important year that taught me a lot of lessons. One, in particular, was: who my true friends are. We all struggled in one way or another and for me, it really showed who's there for me and who isn't, especially in difficult times. Taking a long hard look at some friendships, really showed where I gave too much and who left me feeling emotionally drained (even over Facetime!). Setting up clear boundaries and learning to sa...y "NO" or taking a step back, is not a selfish act but a way to protect yourself. We all have people in our lives (family included) that leave us feeling miserable, drained, frustrated or exhausted and I am here to tell you, it's ok to say "NO" to these people and create a safe space for yourself. Focus on yourself first. If you feel like you are doing good and some people are telling you to do things better you are allowed to say "NO". Clear boundaries that protect you will help you feel your best and it is a form of self-love as you are making your emotional wellbeing a priority. Yes, there will be guilt associated with this at the beginning but as you set up these boundaries, you will see who respects them and who will try to tell you you are wrong. Be mindful of the people around you and sometimes, retreating and focusing on yourself isn't such a bad thing...give yourself the freedom of saying "NO" when it is needed, and trust me, everything will feel much better! Let's be real, being happy all the time is unrealistic, but keeping a sense of gratitude, hope and seeing the good of any situation will lead to a happier and healthier you!... There have been studies that show people who are more optimistic have a lower rate of cardiovascular and cancer-related deaths. Optimistic individuals also tend to have goals and the confidence to reach them! Staying positive also makes you a more pleasant person to be around....just saying! Healthy fats are the theme of the week apparently....don't get me wrong, I am not promoting Keto here. I simply want you to add more healthy fats to your diet, as we tend to eat more of the not so healthy kind. It seems like people either avoid fat like the plague or drink melted butter (Keto is a topic to be discussed at a later time...) One thing I love to eat is sardines. A guilty pleasure snack is eating them with some butter on really crispy bread - I need to perfect my ...grain-free bread in order to make this a grain-free treat :) Sardines are high in Omega 3 fatty acids, which reduce inflammation and lower your risk of cardiovascular disease. They are high in B-12, Vitamin D, and Calcium. They are also a good source of protein. You can eat them as is, mash them up and make a dip/spread, or eat them with your salad instead of canned tuna. Quarantine Life.... I hope you are all comfortable and cozy in your homes. If you are feeling down and in need of something to lift your spirits, get yourself some flowers. I have found that enriching my surrounding with beautiful living plants and flowers has made this experience a little more palatable. It's a small pleasure, but I find that simple things like this add up.... My favourite flowers are peonies which, unfortunately, are not in season so I branched out and got myself some Calla Lilies. Eating fat doesn't necessarily make you fat. I am talking about the healthy fats - the unsaturated fats; the ones that are high in Omega 3. Heart health - eating healthy fats helps lower inflammation in your body. Inflammation is the #1 reason for cardiovascular disease. Brain health - 60% of your brain is composed of fat. Eating healthy fats will support your brain power (i.e. cognition, memory, learning ability, etc.), keep you happy ,and lower your risk of depression.... Skin health - do you suffer from dry, itchy skin or get those little bumps on the back of your arms or bum? This can be a sign of a deficiency of Omega 3 in your diet.
