Happy Valentines Day! How are you celebrating today?

Shine by Kellie 06.02.2021

In light of national children’s dental health month, I wanted to talk a little about the importance of baby teeth. Now, I don’t expect all parents to sit there with a flashlight and dental tools like a #dentalhygienemom, but I do encourage good oral health behaviours at a young age. Baby teeth are so important because of their key role of saving space for a child’s permanent teeth as well as speaking, chewing, and, of course, smiling.... They stay in a child’s mouth for 8-10 years on average, sometimes until age 14. Untreated tooth decay can cause oral infections that enter the bloodstream and lead to other serious health problems, while also allowing bacteria to spread to new adult teeth. Parents, Did You Know? Early childhood tooth decay has become the most common chronic childhood disease. It affects more children than asthma. Most you got this right in my stories yesterday! Great job! Set your kids up for a lifetime of healthy smiles!

Love is sweet, be sure to brush your teeth! Valentines day brings lots of sweets and treats. All the extra sugar puts you at increased risk for cavities. This is your friendly reminder to floss once and brush twice a day!

Love conquers all things, except poverty and toothache. - Mae West It’s National Toothache Day. While a toothache isn’t something to celebrate, it is something to raise awareness on. ... Dental disease doesn’t just impact the mouth, but can also lead to more serious problems that affect your overall health and wellbeing. Majority of toothaches that stem from dental diseases are not only curable but also highly preventable. Unlike other common diseases, clients with dental pain are more likely put off treatment as long as possible, using painkillers for relief instead of getting help from a dental professional. Sadly the pain from dental disease does not improve on it’s own. A toothache may present as a dull ache, throbbing or a sharp pain. A tooth might be sensitive to pressure, biting, hot, cold, or sweets. There are many causes and symptoms of a toothache, which can include: Tooth decay inflammation of the tooth pulp (pulpitis) abscesses gum disease loose or broken filling cracked or impacted tooth exposed tooth root/receding gums food impacted between teeth or trapped below the gumline tooth nerve irritated by clenching or grinding of teeth pressure from congested sinuses traumatic injury When to see your dentist: A toothache that lasts longer than 1 - 2 days Your toothache is severe Swelling of the face, mouth or neck You have a fever, earache or pain upon opening your mouth wide Can toothaches be prevented? Most often, yes. Sometimes, no. As with most oral conditions, good oral hygiene plays a key role. Floss at least once a day Brush for 2 minutes twice a day Use a fluoridated toothpaste Eat a nutritious diet, limiting your sugar + acid intake Go for regular check ups and dental hygiene appointments (at minimum twice a year) Ask your dental hygienist if you’d benefit from some of these other oral hygiene tools: Alcohol free mouth rinse Electric toothbrush Interdental brush Sulcabrush Waterpik Xylitol containing products Have you ever experienced a toothache? Here’s why: Did you know that dental hygienists uphold one of THE strictest infection prevention and control standards amongst all health professionals? Our guidelines go above and beyond to keep your families and our families safe.... We follow all of the recommended BEST practices from Public Health as per our Regulatory Licensing Body. What this means for you Yes, we are working closely with mouths and saliva, but a dental office may be one of the safest places you can go these days with all the safety measures in place. A lot of people lately have been expressing their fears of going to the dental office right now. Understandably so. But putting off your oral health care can be detrimental to your overall health.
