Buddy = Cabbage Patch Favourite choreographers: Shawna = Tessandra Chavez Buddy = Keone Madrid Favourite right now: Shawna = "Was and always will be "Fishing in the Dark" by Nitty Gritty Dirt Band" Buddy = "Until I find another song, my favourite is "Yeah" by Usher featuring Ludacris and Lil' Jon" Favourite activities outside of : Shawna = traveling Buddy = Golf Your Mentor: Shawna = Joe Tremaine, Liz Imperio, Melissa Williams, and Carla Kama Buddy = Joe Tremaine, Lynn Herrick, and Diane Zachary Most valuable life skills you've learned through dance: Shawna = Time management, Discipline, Teamwork, Deeper connection to the body. Buddy = Discipline, Hard Work, Commitment, and Teamwork. Both of their guiding philosophies are important reminders, especially when we are in the thick of training. Shawna reminds us that "Great technique is achieved through hard work and commitment, I respect and appreciate that, however I want you to make me feel something." While Buddy brings us back to the root of it ALL "Dance brings us joy so always remember to have fun, be positive, and live for the moment!" There are constant shifts afoot. Remember that movement is your friend and biggest teacher. Go back to it. Express. Process. and find your JOY! Through the Performing Arts Ashlie has learned "CONFIDENCE! To take criticism and re direct it into education. Care and kindness for all personality types - EVERYONE has something to offer. IT'S MONDAY! We hope that you have all had a beautiful start to your week. If you need a little pick me up here are some inspiring words from another amazing Mentor in our community! Sheila from Artistic Edge Dance Academy Ltd. ... Favourite move: "Pique turn, I really like teaching the technique to it. It can be tedious for some but I like breaking it down and feel I'm doing a good job teaching it to my students." Favourite choreographer: "Travis Wall, Brian Friedman. I really enjoy commercial choreography. When I was a kid, I always looked forward to the release of a Michael Jackson video or Janet or Paula Abdul." Favourite right now: Old town road (because I love hearing my kids sing it at the top of their lungs, no other reason) Favourite activity outside of : "Spending time with my kids and friends. Going for a walk to the park." Your Mentor: "I have a lot of friends who own businesses so we are always getting together talking, encouraging each other, giving and getting advice. I would say they are my mentors." Most valuable life skills you've learned through : "Self motivation, the drive to keep going when you want to give up or don't feel good enough." Sheila's guiding philosophy is something we could ALL use to be reminded of on a daily basis "Encourage kids to reach for goals that seem unattainable. NEVER SET LIMITS ON GETTING WHAT YOU WANT." Favourite move: Plie "Because many dance steps, come and end from this one important move that we learn so young, and is forever part of our practise."... Favourite choreographer: Doug Caldwell and Travis Wall Favourite song right now: Just Like A Prayer - Madonna "This is my all time fav and stands the test of time. When I was little I would perform Madonna music videos in my basement, and I would charge my parents a ticket price to come watch me perform them." Favourite activity outside of : Cooking, spending time with my family, and watching my son play football. Mentor: Kim McSwain and Lauren Ritchie Your guiding philosophy: "To follow your true values, and the universe will send you those who align with the same values. Those who do not align will fall away and create space for a more positive and bright tomorrow. Be kind, stay true to yourself and know you are worth it." Important life skills you've learned through : "I could write a novel on what life skills dance has taught, and continues to teach me! The few I will highlight are; teamwork, the ability to take corrections, apply them and learn and grow from them. As well as discipline, hard work, commitment and determination." "Through dance we leave with a gift that extends far past the classroom, and the dance world setting. I see this time and time again in my current students, but see it continue to show up in my graduated students as well." ...We could not agree more!
