Chief Shingwaukonse King George III Medal (Replica) Chingwackonce was present at the battle of Queenston; he, with a band of warriors of his tribe, took tho part of the English in the last war with the United States, and the medal which he wears was given to him by General Brock. (1849).[1] Suspended on colorful strands of silk ribbon, made from solid silver--and in his time would have been presented on a Scarlet Red Ribbon--the Great Chi...ef Shingwaukonse would have been presented with an identical medal (shown above) for his bravery and his services in the War of 1812. These King George III Medals were known as War time medals and were distributed to Indian Chief’s from 1776 until 1814. On these medals, they bare the image of a young King George in his armor with the inscription GEORGLUS III Dei GRATIA and on the reverse side the Royal Coat of Arms. This medal is one out of the three types of medals given out to chiefs and warriors for their services in the war. The original medal is said to be in the Pine family and has been passed down from generation to generation. Here, at Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig, we are fortunate enough to have this replica on loan and will be on display in our new building and archive. Please stay tuned for details on the viewing.
