Well that was certainly a year for the books. Today, as we are preparing to welcome in 2021, our friends the Blanchards from the Kustom Autosound-Accessories Family came by to drop off a donation. Folks may wonder we are always so thankful of those who support us. Donations pay for the care of our service animal team, such as this load of hay that was delivered today. At times we get so wrapped up in the processes that we forget what Shining Horizons means to those who benefit the most. We are honoured to provide therapeutic riding services to families and we look forward to 2021 when we hope to offer to more.

We are always amazed at how wonderful are the people and businesses in our community. Once again we are sending out thanks. We needed more storage. Thanks to DP World Saint John, Inc. for working to not only find, but to fund the donation of this storage container and to Loyalist City Towing 2012 for ensuring the safety of the delivery. We also thank volunteer Alex Kehoe for leading this project. We are so proud to call Saint John our home.

As you enjoy your weekend, think about Shining Horizons for Giving Tuesday. Most people know about Black Friday and Cyber Monday now GivingTuesday is coming to Canada on December 1st, 2020. It is a new Canadian movement for giving and volunteering, taking place each year after Cyber Monday. The Opening day of the giving season, it is a day where charities, companies and individuals join together to share commitments, rally for favourite causes and think about others. We have two days that are good for the economy. Now we have a day that is good for the community too.

We hope everyone had a wonderful thanksgiving weekend. This morning at approximately 8.50am a female in a Hyundai Santa Fe stopped in the driveway, got out and visited the horses. Does anyone know who this may be? As much as we appreciate assistance, we need to ensure that kind souls are not feeding our Service Animal team. Each horse is on a specific diet and adverse to certain foods. Please let us know in advance if visiting, the health of our service animal team is of utmost importance. Thank you all for your assistance.

Beautiful sunset tonight at Shining Horizons

The uncrating occurred today. Over 7 years ago SHTRA started on a path that has led to where we are today. SHTRA started fundraising for this Riding for Disabled Simulator even before we started to fundraise for our Equine Therapy Centre. Today we opened the crate and we have our simulator in our facility, our home. This simulator will provide benefit to so so many. The very first contribution to our Simulator campaign was from the NB Children's Foundation. We owe thanks to you for your donation and faith in SHTRA. The NB Children's Foundation, along with The Turnbull Home Foundation, The Windsor Foundation & The Sir James Dunn Foundation ensured this wonderful unit was placed in our facility today. We still have some work to do prior to being operational, but we thank all for your support.

We all are very excited here at Shining Horizons. Can anyone guess what came to our facility today? More pictures of uncrating tomorrow. A very very big shout out of thanks to Paul Cameron of Saint John West Home Hardware Building Centre. Without Paul, who volunteered his time and equipment, this great big box would not have made it inside the barn. Thanks Paul!

Thank you for your consideration in donating to our Dollar a Day, for less than the price of a coffee you can help us continue to provide much needed therapy to the children and youth in our program, as well as allowing us to expand to assist even more.

For this Labour Day weekend, we want to take time to thank those who are devoting their labour to ensure that we achieve our mission of helping our participants and their families thrive through therapeutic riding. We have wonderful support who we rely on daily to ensure all is right for our service animal team and for those we serve. We were so lucky to have amazing summer students who worked hard to ensure that we moved forward to complete our goals. As you can see by this picture, no slacking at Shining Horizons, our staff have many who watch over them,,,we thank all for your hard work.

2020 has been quite a year so far. With all the uncertainties and strangeness Shining Horizons has been able to push hard to move forward to strengthen our association by developing new By-Laws, Policies & Procedures, and Operations Manual. This work was completed under the direction of our Vice Chair Rhea Bowen and UNB Distance Summer Student Corben Parker. We thank these two for their hard work. One of the tasks for our summer has been the upgrading of our trails for enhanced safety. The work is progressing nicely. Another thank you to the GSJ Community Foundation for the support. This would not be happening without the assistance.

Big shout out of thanks to our friend Piper King. This amazing gal, daugther to Aaron King and Jacqueline Hewey King went to a birthday party last weekend, the theme of the party was each had to donate to a charity of choice. Piper donated $20 to Shining Horizons. Thanks so much Miss Piper.

The team is enjoying the protection from the weather provided by the new run ins. We want to thank Rachael Quinn and Pat Quinn who assisted to get these up and complete. These amazing volunteers put in many hours weekly ensuring our service animal team is happy, healthy & safe. Thank you so much.

We wish all a happy and safe New Brunswick Day weekend. Times have been strange of late. We reflect back on this post as one of the strongest examples of how our program can assist individuals. We sincerely thank all in our community for continuing to support Shining Horizons which allows us to continue to assist others. We are home town NB Proud!

During these strange times we have had many concerns, as a registered charity, our staff, participants, volunteers, fundraising and, the daily care of our Service Animal Team. It can be a scary place when we depend on donations and support of our community to continue supporting our participants in the best way possible, thankfully our community has recognized this need and really has stepped up to the plate. Our summer students took a bit of time to complete a run in for our service animals. This will provide much needed shelter from both direct sun and rain. With the help of volunteers and donations, Amy & Matt have learned some great carpentry skills. Great job team, and thanks to all for the continued support of Shining Horizons.

The new normal has provided us with many challenges as we seek 70% of our revenue from fundraising, and our normal fund raising activities have been impacted negatively. All at Shining Horizons want to wish Sarah Williams such congratulations on her graduation from Simonds High School today with High Honors,,gaining 3 scholarships/bursaries. Sarah has been working with us for over 2 years every weekend and during the summers. Sarah is not only a dedicated hard worker, but very experienced with horse care and training. As she moves forward towards her career path of Veterinary Science, we thank Sarah for being part of our team and wish her great success. Sarah and Blaze have a special relationship and Blaze was so pleased to be able to offer his love to Sarah today.

WE NEED YOUR HELP! Our Service Animal Team are been the backbone of our successful therapy program. They receive year-round exemplary care and training.... What does this mean? Each horse is checked daily to ensure health & safety, Feeding schedules are designed for the unique needs and healthy maintenance of each horse and feed must be purchased and paid for! Despite the continued need for therapeutic services for children and youth with special needs, each individual HORSE’S needs, mental and physical health are our priority This ensures that all our horses have a happy, healthy and productive life. They receive ongoing training and exercise for their job in a gentle and supportive manner , Just like people, horses sometimes have off days, and our highly trained and nationally certified instructors are very sensitive to recognize this and accommodate the situation AND NOW WE ARE DEALING WITH COVID 19Our program has been postponed due to the outbreak, but our Service Animal Team is a biggest concern they still need all the care described above. No one knows how long these challenging times will continue. Throwing a few flakes of hay and filling a water trough is not enough! WE NEED YOUR HELP to support the ongoing exemplary care of our Shining Horizons horses by our qualified staff. We realize these are very tough times for everyone and understand this is not the climate in which to be seeking fundraising dollars. But, IF you are able to please consider assisting, please review our Dollar A day brochure. however small, this will ensure our horses are healthy while we all struggle with the impact of this pandemic. Our program participants, for whom the horses have become a huge part of their lives, have lost all their therapies OT, PT, Speech Language, mental health counselling, but not connecting with their Therapy Horse is proving the most challenging. We want to be ready to welcome them back to this empowering program when we return to normal living once again.
