Biwaase’aa staff continue to provide fun and insightful experiences to students by sharing their knowledge of First Nations in Ontario and Canada.
Aboriginal Head Start educators are using dramatic a play to engage their students and to teach them about Inuit life in Canada.
As we return to in-person learning at the schools, Biwaase’aa staff will be working hard to provide fun and insightful teachings to the students. This month, we are excited to share knowledge about First Nations in Ontario and Canada.
The kindergarten class got together during circle time and discussed their hopes and dreams as well as topics they would be interested in learning about. The educators wrote them down and tied them to our large classroom dream catcher.
We’re Going on a Bear (Makwa) Hunt, a Kindergarten class favourite the children are now able to recite the whole story on their own. This builds their reading skills! If you have the book at home invite your child to read it with you. Or follow along with this read-along video of the story https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2OI7fe766nk. The kindergarten children like to act out the story by moving around the room. Pretend you are walking through the long wavy grass swi...shy swashy, swishy swashy, swishy swashy. Try a new action for each of the settings you encounter during the story. This story helps your child to learn pre-reading skills, propositions (i.e., under, over, through, in) and encourages them to enjoy reading.
Men’s Fancy Dancer, Cameron Tyance came by Shkoday on the day of our first appreciable snowfall.
We received a nice blanket of white over night
Women's Traditional Dancer, Cathy Irene Fobister, came by for a visit. The children really enjoyed meeting her.
We have had to make some modifications to how Biwaase’aa delivers our cultural week festivities this year. At St. Ann School, our Youth Outreach Worker (YOW), Lyndahl is physically present in the classroom while he introduces teaching videos made by other Biwaase’aa YOWs. Fallon is featured here on video, as well as Ogden’s YOW, Dannell, who was onsite singing songs and hand drumming.
