Kakizome is the first calligraphy writing of the New Year. It started in the Heian Periodand initially it was only for nobles. During the Edo period), Kakizome was adopted by common citizens. Back then, people would bring water from a well on the morning of New Year’s day and use it for cooking, etc. after receiving blessings from the gods. They would then use the remaining water for calligraphy on January 2nd. ... They would write good luck poems and position them facing the direction of good luck.
