A post for Beginner Crocheters I want to talk tension and gauge with you. Do you personally have questions, concerns, preferences? Lay it all out, I want to help answer some questions! Here are a few things I wish I knew in the beginning:... Gauge is a reference to the size of crochet hook used. Typically a 3.5mm to 5mm crochet hook is used in a 'medium weight' yarn application (3 to 4 or 5) while smaller hooks are reserved for lighter weigh yarns and larger for heaftier fibers. Tension can be explained as simple as this; The smaller the hook the smaller the hole. SO keeping that in mind IF you have ever made a hat that was slightly too small, DO NOT GIVE UP! GO UP! A hook size in difference could mean the world of difference in your personal tension. It may allow you to see the spaces you are meant to enter and the ones that have been worked as well as the ones that can wait their turn. IF you have ever made something that was "Too sturdy" - meaning the stitches were too tight and you essentially created an unwavering canvas. Then maybe the stitches were too small to allow the give needed, you worked the wrong loop (or too many) & you potentially used too small a hook. You could have made a hat slightly too large, EASY FIX! Just go down a hook size! The same can be said for toys (aka Amigurumi) if your dolls have any regular holes on the body you may need to go down a hook size. If you can see an Ami's insides only on your decrease stitches, consider using an invisible decrease technique. Creating clothing/blankets/wearable items? Creating gauge swatches? A gauge swatch is only 4"x4" and can help you BEFORE you ever feel like you wasted your time. Consider always doing a gauge swatch before creating with the yarn you intend to use. This way you will always know the right hook to use before starting. A gauge swatch is you using the reccomended hook for the yarn, crocheting a length of 4+" & working a portion of the pattern in a little square. This lets you know how many stitches by how many stitches you will have every 4" of crochet you create. It requires a ruled edge, some patience and potentially a few tries with a few different sizes of hook but it's well worth it in the end. Let me know if you have any specific questions I'm #stayinghome so ask away!
