Today is my birthday and last night I was reflecting about whether or not I would have my classic birthday cry ~ because how trivial does it feel to mourn aging amidst such a colossal year of twists and turns? If I could tell myself what laid ahead last November, would I have chosen to live my daily life any differently, taking nothing for granted? Would I better prepare my business? Would I give hugs generously and savor the company of friends even more? You better believe i...t. But what is life, if not, unpredictable? Hindsight is 20/20 and all we can do is hold our heads up and soldier on. When 2020 is hindsight, how will we look back at it? How will we look back at ourselves? Did we walk on with kindness and compassion, courage and bravery? When others fell, did we lift them up? Did we SUPPORT each other? So this morning as I read through a sweet birthday letter from my husband outlining the trials and triumphs of the past year and how proud of me he was, even though I vowed not to, I shed a few tears. Not because I have more grey hairs on my head or fine lines on my face, but because, this year, I’m overwhelmingly GRATEFUL. Grateful for my health and the health of those dear to me, for the support of my family and friends, and for the support of YOU GUYS, Bureaux’s faithful customers, suppliers and online community, who have allowed my business to defy odds that some sadly have not been able to this year. THANK YOU. Your purchases pay the bills, but your kind words and encouragement fill my tank. This is a lengthy, personal post and maybe you might leave because that’s not what you’re here for (I promise to resume regular scheduled content asap) - but small business IS personal and it’s that heart and familiar face behind every small business that make your support even more valuable. This is me and my daughter, Penny. Sometimes she hangs out with me at work and maybe one day she will want to take the reigns from her Mama (but maybe she will want to be an astronaut and that’s ok too). We’re feelin’ those winds of change today (both literally and figuratively) On the subject of change (smooth, I know), with new Metro Vancouver and Fraser Valley health restrictions in place for the next two weeks, we want to ensure we are doing our part to protect our community and ourselves so that our shop can remain open through the winter months. We now request that you wear a mask while shopping in our store (while it has always been strongly encouraged, it is no longe...r optional), and that you sanitize your hands upon entering.
