Effective today, the Ontario provincial government announced, The increasing of the Non-Resident Speculation Tax to 20% Expanding the tax to apply province-wide in efforts to fight tax avoidance in the housing market ... Eliminating the rebates for international students and foreign nationals working in Ontario. The province says that by increasing the NRST- frequently referred to as a foreign buyer’s tax- and widening its reach (the speculation tax used to only apply to Greater Golden Horseshoe region), it will dissuade speculative activity in the market from non-resident investors, thereby improving housing affordability for Ontario residents.
