*ANNOUNCEMENT* Thanks to Lowe’s Canada, SHP Winnipeg has received the largest local donation from the 2020 Lowe's Canada Heroes Campaign! The Winnipeg chapter just received a cheque for nearly $49,000!!! We were thrilled to see all our Lowe’s and RONA stores in Winnipeg come together for the first time to support SHP Winnipeg. Thanks to our associates’ dedication and the community’s generosity, we were able to present the charity with our largest donation to date in the Win...nipeg area, says Cheryl Ginter, District Manager at Lowe’s Canada. Supporting our communities has always been a priority at Lowe’s Canada, but this year, that commitment took on a whole new meaning. The Lowe’s Canada Heroes campaign was an opportunity for our stores to show up for communities at a time when they needed us the most. It also gave us the opportunity to help raise local awareness about this new charity in Winnipeg, which helps give children in need a bed of their own. We at SHP Winnipeg are amazed that all four Lowe’s and RONA stores in Winnipeg wanted to support us, and incredibly humbled to know that the majority of the donations came from local customers. This donation will be used towards the procurement of materials and supplies to complete the 150 beds that were built by Tec Voc High School through our Schools Program, and the rest will be used towards our public bed building initiatives this year, which will allow us to provide even more children in Winnipeg with a bed to sleep on. WE DID IT!!! Seven weeks ago we launched our 50 Days of Giving Campaign with the goal of collecting donations to complete 50 beds in 50 days for 50 Winnipeg children by December 31st, and we did it! In fact, we exceeded our goal! Over the past seven weeks, we collected enough money to purchase 54 twin size mattresses and we collected a total of 61 blankets, 52 sheet-sets and 50 pillows - all because of our incredibly generous SHP Friends and Followers who have so graciously... joined us on our mission to ensure every child in Winnipeg has a bed to sleep on. Friends, this was more than just a campaign - it was a project that took our focus away from this pandemic, the lockdowns and all the stress. It was a project that brought strangers together, from all over Winnipeg and Manitoba, who became supporters who turned into friends who wanted to become a part of a bigger initiative - bringing a sense of dignity to families and warmth and comfort to children. We are incredibly humbled by everyone’s contribution towards making this inaugural campaign a huge success! You believed in our mission, in our efforts and now the lives of 50 of Winnipeg’s children will be changed because we were determined to make the last 50 days of 2020 the most meaningful! One of the rewarding things about being a part of Sleep in Heavenly Peace is that we meet some amazing people with huge hearts. One of those angels is Hollis. Hollis heard about our organization from one of our local news stories, so she decided to reach out to us because she had some special donations that would not only give a child warmth, but something they could keep forever. Hollis dropped off four handmade patchwork quilts that were literally works of art to donate to ...the children on our list in need of beds. Hollis is just one shining example! In fact, generous SHP Friends and Followers have donated a total of 97 handmade quilts and blankets to SHP Winnipeg in 2020. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to SHP Friends like Doris, Delia and her daughter, Michelle, Dorothy, Debbie, Pat, Don, Virginia, Elizabeth, Pam and her entire family, Vivianne, Sheree, Jana, Theresa Ann, Bobbie and her mother-in-law, Terri, Susan, Joyce, and everyone at the Niverville Thrift Store. Wow! I guess we could say Santa came early this year, but we know full well Santa had nothing to do with this! This was all YOU! We’ve just completed a second week of our 50 Days of Giving campaign with the goal of collecting donations of 50 new mattresses, 50 new pillows and 50 new sets of bedding/bed-in-a-bag, by the end of December. SCHOOL PROGRAM OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED! Sleep in Heavenly Peace Winnipeg has launched a new School Program thanks to TELUS Friendly Future Foundation Grant. Tec Voc High School students and staff will build 150 beds for Winnipeg's children in need throughout the 2020-2021 school year.... The launch of SHP Winnipeg’s new school program, which creates partnerships between SHP Winnipeg and schools, was made possible by a $10,000 grant from the TELUS Friendly Future Foundation. SHP Winnipeg Schools Program is an opportunity for high school students to grow their skills while helping their community through bed construction, donations, and storytelling to raise awareness about bedlessness in Winnipeg. SHP Winnipeg has donated, delivered and installed a total of 43 BEDS with mattresses and bedding to Winnipeg families! Hidden behind each one of these smiles is a heart wrenching story. From three young brothers and their mom arriving to Canada in the middle of winter after leaving their refugee camp in Nigeria; to two young local girls ages five and six who had been sleeping on an air mattress on the floor with their mom since the day they were born; to a single dad leaving... an abusive relationship and wanting to start a new life for himself and his kids. All of them have one thing in common hope for a better future for their family. The donations we receive for lumber, for material, for mattresses, for pillows, for bedding, and time from our volunteers, come together to create a sense of peace to families, warmth, rest and self-worth to a child. Their smiles and their pure joy when they see their bed for the first time is what fuels us through every donation drive and bed building event.
