In addition to increased Monarch numbers, there are lots of Giant Swallowtails around right now. As the largest butterfly in Canada, they're hard to miss!

Nick Taylor-Vaisey from Maclean's magazine penned this essay about "the joy of looking up" (specifically, at birds). In preparation, he spoke to Ian to get some insights about Baltimore Orioles, a favourite bird to so many! https://www.macleans.ca//a-baltimore-oriole-was-my-gatewa/

New trip just added to our fall program, nature sketching! You do not need to be an artist to join. On this outing you will learn how to draw birds in the field. In today's digital photography age, it has become too easy to snap a picture of a bird without really looking at it. A trip for artists and non-artists alike, you will learn how to appreciate the birds you see by putting your observations on paper and become a better birder by noticing details you may have missed before. https://www.shrewsolutions.com/nature-sketching

EVENT UPDATES: Due to the extreme heat warnings issued for our area, we have decided to postpone the Butterfly and Dragonfly field trip on Saturday as well as the Naturalist's-eye View (General Nature) field trip on Sunday. We typically run rain or shine, but it is too unsafe to be outside for prolonged periods of time in this heat. The next Butterfly and Dragonfly field trip is on Saturday, July 25th, and the next Naturalist's-eye View field trip is on Wednesday, August 5th. Butterflyweed is the most vibrant of the milkweeds, and it is absolutely stunning right now! It's also irresistible for many pollinators, including this Pearl Crescent (left) and Acadian Hairstreak (right). Seeing this dazzling sight during yesterday's field work made it worth facing the inferno.

Take a second look at those "little white butterflies that are everywhere." If there are dark spots on the wings, then you've almost certainly found a Cabbage White (common and non-native), but if there are faint lines and no spots on the wings, then you've found a Mustard White (native, but less common). This photo of a Mustard White on Poison Ivy proves that the infamous plant's itchy rash in a non-issue for butterflies! (not the case for the photographer...)
