Sockeye Salmon Giveaway Last week, SFC staff helped to arrange a nation-to-nation transfer of surplus sockeye salmon to the Secwepemc from the Lake Babine Natio...n's commercial fisheries company (known as Talok Fisheries LP). According to Greg Taylor, a fisheries advisor and board member for Talok, these fish are from our licenced economic opportunity fishery at the Babine River fence (in the Skeena Watershed). All local spawning needs and FSC harvest opportunities were satisfied before these fish were harvested for sale. Eleven different Secwepemc communities sent representatives to the Shuswap Nation Tribal Councils offices in Kamloops to pick up a share of the nearly 1,100 fresh sockeye from the transport truck. Everyone was very grateful to have some sockeye for their communities food needs. It was so good to see the joy on the faces during these trying times. Many thanks to the Lake Babine Nation and Talok Fisheries for this kind, generous and timely delivery. #secwepemc #sockeye #talokfisheries #lakebabinenation
It is with much regret that the SNTC/SNBI team have made the difficult but necessary choice to cancel this season's hunting camps. Due to the rise of covid-19 ...cases, and by recommendation of the First Nations Health Authority, we have chosen that cancelling these camps is in the best interest of the public health of our elders, youth, and families. For more information regarding covid-19 please visit the First Nations Health Authority website at: https://www.fnha.ca/ Any other questions or concerns can be made by contacting the SNTC office (778-471-8200) to the attention of Devan Swaine, Secwepemc Law Project Manager. We thank you for your understanding and your cooperation in keeping our communities safe. Until next hunting season, we wish you a very safe and healthy transition into the fall season.
