NEWS RELEASE April 29, 2020 GROUPS SET STRATEGY FOR EMERGENCY ECONOMIC ACTION Working together, we will get through this. That has been the message across the c...ountry as we all deal with the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Working together is also how the Shuswap region intends to move forward with its COVID-19 Emergency Economic Response Plan. Shuswap Economic Development, Shuswap Tourism, Salmon Arm Economic Development Society, Community Futures Shuswap and the Tsuts'weye Womens Entrepreneur and Innovation Network have come together to develop a Phase I response to the economic impacts currently facing Shuswap businesses and organizations. The plan is designed to respond directly to the needs expressed by the local business community and stakeholder organizations. It will help mobilize resources and offer supports to assist businesses with their immediate needs as the COVID-19 situation continues to evolve. This builds upon existing collaborative efforts and will supplement and support the response work being done by economic development and community support organizations across the region. An Emergency Support Hub has been set up as a one-stop place for businesses seeking support to make contact. From the Hub, businesses will be able to access services in six key areas: resource sharing & emergency support line, workforce support, community marketing, mentorship & training, digital transition and financing & emergency cash flow. Local businesses asked for help in a number of areas. In response, the plan targets some specific supports. This includes providing a reliable and comprehensive source for information on local, provincial, federal and corporate business support programs. Other initiatives will assist businesses with online sales, connect businesses with mentors and expert advice, develop labour resources in case of emergency need, identify temporary business funding options and plan for the re-launching of marketing campaigns in response to changing pandemic conditions. Pictured are 4 - 4' X 8' sheds that they have built and are selling for $1200.00 each to cover the cost of material. The sheds are on display at Salmon Arm Home Building Centre for anyone that would like to take a closer look.

Congratulations to the Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival for 25 years of success. Thankyou from all SCIP members for the special invitation to the Thursday appreciation night as well as the acknowledgement given to the SCIP membership for the contributions made for the renovation of the new Roots and Blues Headquarters.

The students from the Explore A Trade Program were given the opportunity to showcase their talents on Friday at the Salmon Arm Secondary Jackson Campus to some of the local contractors in the area. They were given a budget of $15.00 each to purchase supplies and then use their imagination to build something and demonstrate how it works. Projects included carpentry, electrical and plumbing. Congratulations to each of you for completing on budget and on time.

SCIP takes pride in supporting the future of our Construction Industry. Students from School District 83 Explore A Trade Program are learning more than just Carpentry skills. They are now expanding their knowledge into the Electrical and Plumbing Trades.

The students from School District 83 Explore A Trade Program had the opportunity to experience first hand some of the basics of home building thanks to the crew at Hindbo Construction Group Inc.

North Okanagan - Shuswap School District 83 has it together by introducing Trades Training to youth at a very young age. SCIP continues to support their programs.

The staff from the Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival are enjoying their near completed new office digs thanks in part to the support of the members of the Shuswap Construction Industry Professionals. The new office is located at 541 3rd Street SW in Salmon Arm. A standing ovation to all the SCIP members that donated money and time to make this happen.

One of the many duties of the Shuswap MLA Greg Kyllo is to help non profits make it possible to follow through with their mandate by digging and advocating on their behalf to find funds to help them out. Most recently SCIP has been actively promoting and supporting the new Explore A Trade Program through School District # 83. A letter was written to our MLA in the Fall requesting funding to help out with the duties of SCIP so we can continue to move forward and promote worthy causes such as this. Through the gaming funds Mr. Kyllo was able to find us some money and on March 22, 2017 presented us a cheque in the amount of $10,000.00. Thank you very much from the SCIP Board of Directors.

The students from School District #83 are working hard building 4' X 8' tool sheds as a project for the new Explore A Trade Program.
