Name That Thing Winner Well. This one was not a big challenge. It is, of course, a woodburning stove. Congratulations to our winner of this month’s $25 draw prize, Bridget Fortin. While the benefits of using fire for heat and cooking have been with us for centuries, the efficiency of woodburning apparatus has not always been seen as important. Fireplaces, still found in home and cottage, have over time ranged in size from tiny to colossal, depending on whether they are f...ound in a home or a castle. With the fireplace, unless it is located in the center of a room or house, where it heats the bricks as well as the flue, much of the heat escapes up and out the chimney, rather than just into the room. This appears to be what precipitated the invention of the wood stove, which is more efficient and allows for more control of the rate of the burn, as well as generating heat which remains inside a building. My understanding is that the first woodburning stove was manufactured sometime in the 1500’s but they did not become commonplace until the mid-1700’s. Their popularity was stoked (pardon the pun) rather ironically, by a shortage of wood. Because they burned more efficiently than open fireplaces, they used less wood. Their popularity and demand sparked a new industry. Woodburning apparatus, including for cooking and heating water, were manufactured in all shapes and sizes. Some municipalities have banned the use of woodburning fixtures due to the smoke and gases which they emit. Manufacturers have made huge improvements to their products and coupled with regulations governing air quality, newer models of wood stoves have fewer emissions and burn cleaner and more efficiently than older models. . Read more about this item in the Historical column written by Jan Penner in the next issue of the North Shuswap Kicker set to be released on February 5th. Find out what our next mystery item is and make a guess for your chance to win $25! You can read the Kicker on-line at www.kicker.ca

Christmas Hampers - North Shuswap Food Bank By Alison Elmes It is hard to believe that Christmas is almost upon us. The North Shuswap Food Bank/Christmas Hamper Committee is once again planning to offer Christmas Hampers to those in need in our community.... The hampers and caring that can be offered to people who find themselves in difficulties, for whatever reason, make a big difference over the holiday season and also lighten the load of putting food on the table during January and February. As always, our focus is to help everyone in need but especially families with children. This program is very dependent on the continuing generosity of the community and is especially needed this year of viral pandemic. Donations of non-perishable food items, gifts, cat and dog food can be put in the collection boxes at Scotch Creek Market and Ross Creek Country Store after November 15. Cheques, made payable to the North Shuswap Food Bank, can be mailed to: - 7465 Squilax/ Anglemont Road, Anglemont, B.C, V0E 1M8. Non- tax deductible receipts will be issued. If you wish to add your name or someone else’s name to the list to receive a Hamper, please call Janice at 250-955- 2393, before the cut-off date of Monday, December 7, 2020. Fire News By Celista Chief, Roy Phillips October is fire awareness month, make sure your smoke alarms are working and you have a home fire escape plan; a good website to check out is www.nfpa.org/Public-Education//Preparedness/Escape-planning. As the days get colder, fireplaces and wood stoves are going to once again be used. As a reminder, inspect your chimneys and wood burning appliances, making sure they are clean and in good working condition.... Thank you to everyone who donated to the Muscular Dystrophy Boot drive this year! A total of $3424.02 was raised! A special thank you to Darlene Volk, Craig Nygard and Jade Shamen for volunteering their time to collect the donations. Work on the parking area and boat launch at Bristow Park is scheduled for October, the Celista Fire Department is looking forward to the completion of this project because it will make access to the dry hydrant easier. Fall training has started and all three departments have been sending members to the Salmon Arm Training Center. The fall training involves courses such as exterior and interior live fire-fighting operations, emergency vehicle driving, pump operator and tactical ventilation. Anglemont currently has one junior fire-fighter. All three fire departments would like to see more young people join this program, it is for young adults between the ages of 15 and 17. This is a great opportunity to learn basic fire-fighting skills and earn school credit. If you are interested in this program, please contact your local fire department. The Celista Department would like to welcome our newest recruits, Dwayne Sarafinchan, Cecil White, Rob Hyslop, Jade Shamen and Shawn Blackmore, thank you for joining our team! The fire departments are still looking for new recruits. If you would like to join the teams, please feel free to stop in Tuesday nights or call your area department and we would be happy to answer any questions. Captain Colton Barker with the Scotch Creek/Lee Creek FD would like mentioned that fire departments on the North Shuswap, are not manned 24/7. We have been receiving calls and voicemails regarding open burning, alarms, etc. These calls often do not get listened to for a minimum of 1 week. If you are calling for an emergency or something that requires a response, call 911. If you are looking to contact the SCLC department for any questions regarding restrictions, you may contact Colton at [email protected] or via cell 250-253-2020 or use one of the numbers below. The North Shuswap Lions provide financial aid to help support disaster relief funds by donating regularly to Lions International Foundation. Major Concerns Expressed for Wild Salmon in Tsutswecw Provincial Park Shared from The Adams River Salmon Society "At this current time the Wild Salmon are spawning in the side channels of the Adams River, Lee Creek, BC. However, the salmon are being disturbed and their nests (Redds) are being destroyed or damaged by careless fishermen wading into the river and spawning grounds. As you will see from the sample letter attached we have written to several department heads a...nd MP’s asking for their help and support. The wild salmon were designated at risk spring 2020 and the returning count has been decreasing for several years.
