more great pictures from the DOS and of the businesses in town from Ardel
Big thanks to Ardel for taking some pics for me of DOS and business making things look great for the holidays. I hear there is more to come later this week, stay tuned.
First place for Communities in Bloom "Bloom where you are planted" contest. Thanks to the legion and the DOS for their support of this project, to Ardel for her superior photography and for all the others that lent a hand. We have a beautiful community space that has been recognized by the provincial organization thanks to all of your efforts.
Honourable mention from Provincial Communities in Bloom for our work at the Red Barn. Big thanks to Eagle Valley Arts Council and DOS for their support of this project.
Honorable mention for Sicamous CiB in our BLOOM where you're PLANTED contest. Find out more information about all our BLOOM where you're PLANTED entries at www.bccib.ca
Ashur and his family always help Communities in Bloom when asked, lets support his fund raiser for hockey with bottles or meat purchases (I hear Fraser Valley has very good meat)
Sicamous deserves recognition for their Legion project. Congratulations on being chosen first for your amazing transformation. Find out more information about all our BLOOM where you're PLANTED entries at www.bccib.ca
It was just announced Sicamous won first prize and honourable mention (4th) for their entries (The Legion and The Red Barn) in the provincial communities in bloom contest for this year. The Executive Director for BC Communities in Bloom said the judges could see how much work we had done on both projects and what a difference they have made to the community. YAY! 5 blooms here we come!
Sorry I have been lax posting, just so much going on. Today I am just going to remind people of the Weeding/clean up we are doing at the Senior's housing flower beds tomorrow (Saturday Oct 3). We are meeting behind the senior's centre at 9am and we will divide up the work. 9-9:30 we will get the work assignments organized. I am thinking many hands will make light work from the the responses I have received to date. Thanks again to the Legion for providing the bag lunches.
Della and Colleen putting some finishing touches on the new garden at the back of the Red Barn while I put up a few more barn quilts on the fence panels. Down to the short strokes.
Fungi Festival long walk just left from the legion for the day with special treat Brooke Page and Dexter the truffle dog. Paul's short walk leaves at 1, mushro...om soup, ratatouillie with hericium and chantrelles (vegan friendly) over rice pilaf and mushroom cheese flatbread being served all day upstairs at the legion (enter through the back door) Andy is outside selling his trees and hosting his plant give away. He has also graciously offered to host a plant exchange for Sicamous Communities in Bloom if you have divided plants you would like to bring down See more
Big thanks to my niece Sheri and her daughter Shae for helping me to get 2 barn quilts up to finish off landscaping on the South side of the Red Barn. Big thanks to the District of Sicamous, Eagle Valley Arts Council (and BQ painters) and Jim and Val at JB Marine for letting me have so much fun with this project.
https://www.eaglevalleynews.com//work-at-sicamous-legion-/ thanks to Ardel for photo (even though they cropped out what we were trying to show)
My favourite guy prepped flower bed for Red Barn project today. I am a bit dirty, but very happy
Just picked up plant donation from Buckerfields for Red Barn flower bed. Yay!
Start of the Red Barn project and first day of Marc's holiday. Thanks to Val and Jim for letting us trim tree and put flower garden at the front.
In honour of the Japanese Canadians who were relocated to internment camps near Sicamous and across the province during WWII, an Akebono Cherry Blossom T...ree was planted today at Main Street Landing. This beautiful tree, along with one in the Yard Creek area and many more planned for the future, serve as a reminder of this dark spot in our history, and a beacon of strength, resiliency, and the ability to transform. A memorial plaque will be added to the site in the future, explaining the significance of the tree. #akebonocherrytree #cherryblossomtree #japanesecanadian #japanesecanadianinternment #sicamous #yardcreek # @ Sicamous, British Columbia See more

I have an offer from Al Stevens to rototill gardens for anyone that has a garden that needs it and can't manage it themselves. He has the rototiller booked for tomorrow (sun April 26) so get back to me ASAP if you would like him to do your garden or if you know someone who needs this done.
Everything is changing for Communities in Bloom as it is for everyone else. In the next few months our focus is to do what we can as a community in a way that is safe and observes all the rules from the public health officer. Communities in Bloom will not be sending judges into the communities this year, but we have decided we would like to do everything we can to move forward to show case the community virtually and in the Communities in Bloom provincial newsletter. The aw...Continue reading

https://www.eaglevalleynews.com//column-lighting-up-the-w/ I was hoping to share this before the holidays, but loading it online slipped through the cracks at EVN. Better late than never and like I say in the column-lights aren't just for Christmas anymore. Big thanks to Ardel Sikora for the pic.

Finally figured out how to share the column in the Eagle Valley News to our Communities in Bloom FB page. My reason for writing the column is to reach out people in the community that are not on FB. I will be writing a column once a month in the next year with updates on programs we are hosting and tips for gardening and sprucing your property up. I would love to hear from you if you would like to volunteer or if you just want to hear more.
Great initiative, be sure to attend the lunch Nov 30th if you can.
good news story
It has been a busy fall. Thanks to young hockey player Ashur Gjaltema (and Kathleen) and Karen Eastland for planting the daffodil bulbs in front of the Sicamous signs on the East and South Side of town. The Fungi Festival was very successful, but also very busy. Andy Hutchison's tree give away and sale was very appreciated. Thanks to Denny Byers for the plants for fall exchange / give away and Chris Millstone and Colleen Thurgood for their help managing the give away. Thanks to Ardel for her help on the photography front for FF and CiB. I would have been lost without all of you guys and the help you provided.
Great stuff going on. Salmon carving has been installed, Licksnsplits is updating their planters, lots of plant donations for plant exchange Friday.
Just a quick follow up to the previous post CiB awards were last weekend and we retained our 4 bloom status, plus we received the award for landscaping. It was also announced Sicamous would host the awards in 2020. There will be a plant Exchange and tree give away Friday night at the legion during the Fungi Festival.... Fall Planting: we have 100 daffodils to plant and some trees from Andy. Message me if you can help out.
4 blooms baby, and we are hosting BC awards next year. Thanks to Terry for covering for me while I was at Golden Oldies Field Hockey Festival.
If anyone has a bit of time, I have 100 Narcissus (daffodil) bulbs to plant. I confirmed with the DOS they would like to split them 33/33/34 in front of the rocks at the 3 entrance signs.
Great coverage from Eagle Valley News.
Another judging has come and gone. The judges were very complimentary about the community of Sicamous and the improvements we are making every year. Big thanks to everyone in the community that pulled together for another successful effort. Now we just have to wait until September to find out how we did.
Go time! Judges arrive in just over 24 hours. Big thank you to everyone that helped us to get ready. It isn't perfect, but it looks pretty damn good. We would appreciate if people could continue to tidy and spruce things up.
Just a little over 2 days now until the judges arrive, everyone has been working hard and things are looking good. Big thanks to Chris for her hard work on making the flower beds around the fire hall look good.
working on a bit of creative, low cost screening before the judging. if anyone has any old signs with blank backs, would really appreciate getting a few more that we could have some artistic fun with. I left the music in the park signs and Fungi Fest facing forward as it never hurts to get the word out.
Here come the judge(s). July 14th to 16th, let's pull together and make the town look good.
