Yesterday the Premier and I joined folks out at the Sooke River Jack Brookes Hatchery to announce $920,000 for the Creation of Salmon Conservation Facility! Th...is hatchery funding is a key step to helping protect and repopulate wild salmon stocks, while balancing the need for environmental sustainability with the needs of Indigenous communities and local businesses. These are the areas where our first year (3 year olds) Sooke sea pen fish were caught. Amazing how far they travel. There should be a lot more this year and hopefully people turn in the tagged heads. This very vital to our program.

Please remember to turn in your fin clipped chinook. The results from last years fish returns. People that turned in their hatchery fish heads help make this p...roject happen . These fish were from our first year of running the project broodstock 2016/2017 seapen except 1 fish that was a 2 year old. The only Data that is missing is from the river returns

Well the last of this year’s chinook net pen is wrapping up. The total number of smolts released this season was 660,000 -100,000 of these were tagged CWT. We... did two batches of fish and first ones came on April 14,15,16th with an average weight of 3.9 grams and were released at 6.5 grams on May 1st. total number was 440,000 with 50,000 of them were CWTs . The second batch of 220,000 was received on May 4,5,6,7 with 50,000 of these being CWT. They weighed in at 5.6 unclipped and 8.4 grams on the CWTs. We released the last of them on May 20th . The average weight was 8.4 on the non clips and 11.4 grams on the CWTs. I decided to do small group releases over a few days to limit the predation on them. We were the only net pen in operation this year due to Covid-19 and the only group to do CWTs. We limited our volunteer activity to a minimum as to DFO protocol. This made for creative ideas on releasing and pumping fish. I would like to thank my small volunteer crew for the hard work and dedication to making this project happen. The crew was : Mark,Brian,John,Duncan ,Don , Tommy and Blair . Also many thanks to Nitinat Hatchery DFO staff for the logistics of getting us the healthy fish. Glen

Well, had some very unfortunate news yesterday. My hydraulic boat moving trailer was stolen across from masons beach in shawnigan lake. If anyone saw anything or sees it let myself or the rcmp know. Thanks.

If you are going to travel by water, try to avoid contact with anyone outside of your immediate household by keeping a distance of 2 metres from others. How much is that? a canoe, a fishing rod, or 1 wakeboards! http://ow.ly/TouZ50zouQ3

URGENT UPDATE - TULISTA BOAT RAMP - SIDNEY - A CLOSURE HAS BEEN AVERTED! Members of the Sidney Anglers Executive have been working with the Town of Sidney staff to develop guidelines for safe operation during the COVID19 Pandemic. Over the next few days, we will be putting signage and direction markers up at the ramp to facilitate social distancing in order to respect BC Health Guidelines.... We are anticipating cooperation from users of the ramp and ask for patience as we develop the best practices and maintain safety. In order to maintain these privileges and promote smooth operations at the ramp, please come to the facility prepared with well maintained vessels and the ability to handle your vessel independently at all times. Sidney Anglers volunteers will be maintaining a strict 2 metre distance corridor. If we all work together over the coming season we expect better routines to develop that will speed up this process. The Sidney Anglers Association would like to thank its members and the public for the community support to maintain our essential access to this facility. For volunteer opportunities please private message [email protected] with your contact information. Thank you all and safe boating. Grant MacPherson President Sidney Anglers Association

Tonight we were informed by the Town of Sidney by telephone that the Canadian Coast Guard has requested that the Tulista Boat Ramp be closed to recreational users effective May 1st until further notice. As above, this is being done at the Coast Guard's request. The reasons given are as follows: Their call volume has increased x3.... They are limited by access to PPE supplies and are protecting their personnel . Volunteer rescue has decreased crew from 5 to 3 per boat to limit exposure. Essential water travel only is advised by Coast Guard. They are discouraging Recreational boating activities. The SAA Executive remains in contact with Officials and will update as conditions for an opening evolve. Hoping for consultation to develop strategies. Stay safe. See more

CHECK THIS OUT! UBC Chinook Migration and Release studies 2019 & 2020 In order to study the movement of Chinook in and around Southern Resident Killer Whale (S...RKW) habitat in Juan de Fuca Strait and the Salish Sea, the UBC Pacific Salmon Ecology and Conservation Laboratory developed an acoustic tracking study to monitor the migration of Chinook salmon. Studies of adult Chinook returning to the Salish Sea began in 2019. Transmitters were attached externally to healthy Chinook candidates and migrations were monitored using stationary acoustic receiver arrays in Juan de Fuca Strait, Haro Strait, Puget Sound, and the Fraser River. Survival was examined in the context of various handling and gear parameters. With software designed by and collaborative analysis with Kintama Research Services, the data collected by the study is animated in the video below. The map and animation show the passage of nearly 100 Chinook caught by hook and line, assessed, tagged and released in Port Renfrew in the summer of 2019. The 2019 study sought to track Chinook to observe post-release movement and survival rates so that impacts of the public fishery on Chinook transiting through important SRKW habitat could be better understood. The study planned for 2020 will focus both on the Chinook and SRKW relationship and specifically on handling and release and associated mortality of both Chinook and Coho captured using rod and reel with typical angling terminal gear. In partnership with the SFI, the 2020 UBC study will utilise the FishingBC App to collect a broad dataset pertaining to the methods employed by public fishers on the coast through voluntary submission of self-reported capture data, including fight times, air exposure times, gear types and presence of physical injuries. The objective is to help estimate the impacts of the fishery, to better understand the effects of release techniques used by anglers and to develop new research questions to test as data is gathered. The intended outcomes of the upcoming study and project are to develop accurate estimates of post-release survival of Chinook and Coho, scientifically defensible ‘best handling’ protocols to reduce the impact on these species and identify technologies that improve anglers’ abilities to minimally impact Chinook and Coho intended for release. For more detailed information please visit this link for UBC’s document on the study. https://mcusercontent.com//5d975f/UBC_CR_Overview_2020.pdf
