Treaty 1 was signed on August 3, 1871 in the "Stone Fort", also known as Lower Fort Garry. I went there a lot on school field trips and drive by it all the time going to my mom's house. I don't recall learning anything about Treaty 1. I was taught how to curtsy while inside the fort walls, and how to carry buckets of water on my shoulders. Was I not paying attention to the actual important stuff? . I googled Treaty 1 and learned more in five minutes than I remember (o...r was taught?) in history class. This accord for peace reads more like Indigenous peoples surrendering their traditional lands in exchange for broken promises (accurately referred to as the Outside Promises, not one year after the Treaty was signed!
