Looking for help to identify this team. All that is known for sure is that the Assistant Captain is Fiore Pagura. My guess is that the team is the Crows Nest Pass Coalers, a WCJHL team that Fiore Pagura played for in 1952/53, his last year of Junior. He may have played more seasons than one for them but that is all SIHR has recorded. Otherwise, I drew a blank going thru teams names from that era for, Kimberley, Cranbrook, Nelson, Trail and even Lethbridge where he played for ...his first year after Junior and before going to England. After Lethbridge, Pagura played at least one season for the Wembly Lions. It has been suggested that this is not Wembly Pool in London England as that arena was a relatively modern building built for Olympic competition. Does anyone have any suggestions? See more

A crummy year, but 2020 gave us some time to read. As has been tradition, Greg turns over the look back into 2020 hockey books to Todd Denault, who has been plugging away on his own historical hockey project, which is difficult to do when the libraries and archives are closed to visitors. https://sihrhockey.org/__a/public/column.cfm?cid=4

Eduard Georgievich Ivanov (1938-2013) was a staple on the defence of the Soviet national team from 1962/3 until 1966/67. A curious episode from the 1964 Olympics in Innsbruck, however, has led some to falsely assume he played as a forward in that tournament. https://sihrhockey.org/__a/public/column.cfm?cid=3&aid=662

Rick Vaive is back in the spotlight with the publication of his autobiography, Catch 22: My Battles, in Hockey and Life, doing the media rounds, talking hockey. However, in his chat with Two Minutes for Reading so Good with Greg Oliver, the talk switched a bit to his relationship with Scott Morrison, his co-author on the book from Penguin Random House Canada. Today, came the sad news of the passing of Ken Schinkel, a player who broke into the NHL with the New York Rangers but really became established as a bonafided NHLer as an original Pittsburgh Penguins player. Ken Schinkel was 87 years. RIP.

The Florida Panthers on Tuesday hired Brett Peterson as an assistant general manager, making him the first Black executive to hold that position in the NHL. Peterson’s hiring comes days after the nearby Miami Marlins hired Kim Ng as the first female GM in Major League Baseball. The NFL’s Miami Dolphins have a Black GM, Chris Grier, and coach, Brian Flores. I don’t think they’re just going out to get people I think they’ve identified people that are good at what they do and...Continue reading

Having heard the same thing for years and years, Serge Savard caved, gave in, but it turned out okayin two languages. Every publisher came to me, You should publish your story, you should publish your story. I dont know, maybe I was too lazy. It was a lot of work, chuckled Savard on the phone from his winter home/golfing haven in South Carolina. Read Greg's interview now!... https://sihrhockey.org/__a/public/column.cfm?cid=4&aid=655

1000 page likes... that's the accumulated number we recorded earlier tonight. Thank you to those of you who have taken the time to like our page. We try to curate an interesting page touching mostly on hockey's history, sometimes it's present, and occasionally we peek into the future.

Alex Trebek, the host of syndicated game show Jeopardy! since 1984, passed away from pancreatic cancer Sunday November 8. He was 80-years-old. Although a tv star with limited hockey acumen he nevertheless brushed up against the sport numerous times. As a child, Trebek played hockey in Sudbury, but his skills on the frozen pond or lack there of led to a career in broadcast news as a newscaster and sportscaster with the Canadian Broadcasting Company. Listen, I had skates ...with soft toes, that shows you how poor we were, he said. The longtime host of Jeopardy idolized the championship Red Wings of the 1950s, and his boyhood favorite, Gordie Howe. But I remember when I was in school in Ottawa I drove to Montreal, got a seat in the Forum, very, very high up at the end of the rink, behind the goal and Gordie came down and took a long shot, just inside the blue line and beat Jacques Plante. I said, ‘OK, that’s great. Right!’ It made the trip worth while. When Gordie left Detroit, my allegiances switched to the Montreal Canadiens, Trebek said. I didn’t have anybody to cheer for here and when he fully retired, I thought if I’m going to cheer for a team, I’ll cheer for Montreal. It’s a pretty good team to cheer for. Trebek’s final hockey engagement occurred during the 2020 Junior Entry Draft. Trebek, lent his TV skills to the NHL Draft using the ‘who is’ answer format that’s become synonymous with the trivia gameshow he’s hosted since 1984. The announcement blew up online, with Trebek announcing the Ottawa Senators’ first-round pick, Tim Stützle who now will be the answer to a future trivia question.
