Sikh Heritage Month 02.10.2020

On behalf of Sikh Heritage Month Foundation, we want to wish the entire community a Happy Vaisakhi! Vaisakhi dian lakh lakh vadaeean! As we navigate through these precarious and uncertain times, let us draw on the strength of our history - the history of a people that have faced many obstacles, road blocks and hardships with a courageous, undying spirit. Although Vaisakhi had been celebrated as a day of harvest for Punjabi's years prior, the beginning of Vaisakh means much ...more for Sikhs. On this day, 321 years ago, Guru Gobind Singh Ji established the Khalsa officially by creating the initiation tradition of amrit. This tradition was first completed by the Panj Pyare (five lovers), rendering those who choose to drink the nectar, vessels to the Divine, that would fight injustice and live with the Truth as the ultimate priority. This way of life outlines a balanced understanding of the spirit which is partly the warrior, the philosopher, the saint, the teacher and the learner. Our gurus taught us to lead life with zeal and tenor, and those guiding principles are key in navigating any impediments we may face now. Although Vaisakhi is different for many this year, let us take the time to reflect on the meaning of this important day in the Sikh calendar and connect to Bani, Sangat and the Panth, safely. Whether it is through virtual content, live streams from various Gurudwaras, discussions within our families at home, or literature and films that highlight the essence of sikhi - let us do our best to capture the meaning of this day. This is also a great time to help those in need and offer dasvand (donations) to fuel the community. As Sikhs, we are taught the importance of Sarbat da Bhalla, although it may not feel like you are doing much, by staying at home we are helping all of humankind. Join us for a special online Vaisakhi Program on our IG Live tomorrow!
