Day 2 Remote First Aid.... they broke my leg and wrist in a Eco Resort High Ropes collapse, three hours flight time to Hospital. (Simulation only)
Lunchbreak on the Squamish River doing Remote First aid (The old wilderness designation) with Kensi, prepping for our 5th Amazing Summer at Silver Lake Forest Centre
Picture for reference, check out this video about the amazing spawning salmon, this is a Chum on the coast but the exact same thing occurs with other Salmonoids in the Okanagan. Check out this amazing imagery. Individual "camping" cabins are available for rent during the winter, come check out this wintery paradise with excellent sledding, skiing and snowshoeing opportunities! https://youtu.be/lQO9KdG-3K0
Two weeks ago we had a very successful if smaller and socially distanced workparty weekend. Today I winterized the water system and it appears the moon is tucking camp in for the winter! Can't wait to see all the smiling faces next year! Remember our cabins are available as camping cabins through the winter, messaged me for details.
So many of you know Silver Lake started Spectrum Camps but did you know that much of the funding available to families with autistic children dries up when the kids reach school age? Our partner, through training materials and referrals, the Canucks Autism Network needs your help to continue it's great work, much of its funding has dried up in these Covid times, check out the online 50/50 fundraiser. Www.Canucks.com/online5050... I bought 50!
We arrived to camp for workparty weekend with a few Fire Mitigation burn piles flavoring the air with woodsmoke and proceed to join in, gathering in piles that the crew left for us to either process into firewood or save as fence rails to complete the restoration of camps com/kid fence. We then awoke to several inches of snow this AM glad to have gotten much of it collected before being lost in the snow. Huge thanks to those that came out and made this weekend success and a shout out to Ntityix Resources and the Westbank Community Forest for completing this fire mitigation project!
We wrapped our season with a socially distanced wedding of less than 50. The charcuterie was amazing and when guests thought it couldn't be topped Char (Our Amazing Chef) served up a Prime Rib meal that was amazing (In fact a well-known restaurateur gave Char a great compliment)
The view from Lookout Mountain down to camp in the far corner of the lake is a good place to discuss sustainable forestry, did you know this whole area has been logged once, some places a second time already? Many areas have different prescriptions according to multiple resources.. integrated resource management like, recreation, wildlife, cultural significance and of course timber. Check out this link about Forest Research in BC https://youtu.be/-BMNpZMjVFA Happy National Forest Week!
PEACHLAND BUSINESS'S ROCK! Huge shout out to @peachlandtaxi , Mark was awesome today getting me to the parts store in Westbank and back to the bottom of Princeton Ave.... huge shout out to Chris Boltolfs, a private mechanic in Peachland who stopped, helped, drove us to get another part and stuck around to make sure it was resolved. Currently back in camp and sitting around a fire relaxing thanks to the guys help!
PSA for campera and more importantly parents of campers on the bus today. None of the current fires in the OK are anywhere close to camp, the closest is 25km and three large watersheds away. Let's keep everyone in Penticton and area in our good positive thoughts though because we could see that fire taking runs and possibly crowning last night. slow motion clip for effect.
What does a full (physically distanced) bus load of campers mean at camp.... free labour! Ha ha this was Camp Care where we contribute to camp for 15 mins after lunch. More photos of today's activities to follow! Evans Lake we are on our last week, week 8, hope your week 7 goes well and you have an amazing week 8 like we are having!
Staff campfire tonight!
Campers on Big Rock, always a big draw. Playing with new Drone, awesome pics and clips to come as I learn.
Work Crew learning to form, mix and place concrete on the old round log foundations to level and prepare to replace the old Blacksmith shop with a new maintenance shop. Also a shout out to my brother who is always ready to get dirty and lend a hand even when he shows up expecting to plan a trip and ends up helping me with a major plumbing issue (Token plumbing photo but excluded the less glamorous ones) Thanks @patonrandy
Goodnight from Silver Lake Camp, few days off with the day campers returning Monday AM!
Goodnight from Silver Lake Camp!
There may be dark clouds on the Horizon but they are behind us now. Hopefully thats the case with Covid as well. Anyways we can’t keep these day campers off the water, so I upgraded the water front saftey station sun protection to be more wind resistant! (Campers come with added wind resistance it seems!)
