We would like to thank you all for supporting our farm this year. It is a privilege and honour to grow food for this amazing community! We wish you all a happy holiday season and we look forward to growing again for you in 2021.
We would like to introduce the newest farm member. Maggie is our new farm dog. She is a blue heeler and she is already herding the ducks. Maggie also seems to think that she is in charge of harvesting brussel sprouts!
Taking advantage of this nice weather and getting the winter spinach planted. Kaidyn was a big help this week and planted this 100' bed of spinach all by himself. So happy to have such capable and hard working kids.
This week we lost one of our amazing farm dogs. Lucy our passionate, scrappy terrier died in the line of duty. Farm dogs are such an important part of the farm - they are my companions when I am working alone, an extension of my senses so they can warn me of any danger and my protectors. They are so loyal, they come out with me rain or shine, they make me laugh on those hard days and they wait patiently for me even after dinner is served just to make sure I get home safe. I would never farm without them. This week as I was watering the spinach Lucy was barking in the bush beside me warning me there was a Mama cougar and her 2 kittens just 25 m away. Unfortunately the cougar felt threatened and took Lucy down. We will miss her so much ! Rest in Peace my dear friend!
Kaidyn will be back at the Sooke Country Market again this Saturday. It takes him 2 days to bake his yummy cookies. He will be donating some of his earnings to the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada. Kaidyn met Jane Goodall in 2016 when she came to Victoria and she made quite an impression on him.
Kaidyn is back this Saturday at the Sooke Country Market with more cookies! He is baking up a storm of oatmeal raison, chocolate chip, haystacks, peanut butter, brownies and raspberry crumb bars!
Tomatoes Tomatoes everywhere!!! We will have lots of tomatoes at the Sooke Country Market this Saturday. Have you tried the Sungold orange cherry tomatoes - so incredibly sweet - these are our favourite! Almost as good as strawberries and we will have strawberries this week too! Hope to see you there!
Good News! Kaidyn's Cookies are going to be at the Sooke Country Market this weekend. Chocolate chunk, oatmeal raison, peanut butter, brownies, raspberry crumb bars and haystacks are on the menu. Hope to see you there !
Sometimes when I think I am just not going to get all the harvesting done, someone comes along to lend a hand. Today Kaidyn helped me harvest, weigh and bag veggies. At this time of year there is so much to do. I am a very lucky farmer and mom to have such an amazing family who are always there for me.
I am so lucky to have a daughter who loves to harvest potatoes. Today Jasmine harvested almost 60 lbs of potatoes.
You know you are a farmer when you could be playing basketball but instead you are giving your duck an epson salt bath for a foot infection. Bert is one happy duck!
Would never believe this was a summer harvest day - wow that was a wet day. Unfortunately I was not able to harvest strawberries this week. I can not harvest berries when they are wet or else they turn to mush. This rain has been hard on the berries and I have lost a lot but hopefully next week we will get some sun and the berries will be back! Reminder that the market will be in John Phillips park starting this Saturday from 10 -2pm. Hope to see you there!
Look who found the strawberries this week! Luckily he only got into a few patches so there will still be berries this Saturday. The June bearing are coming to an end but the ever bearing plants will be producing again in a couple weeks! We should have berries most of the summer.
Lots of veggies coming to market this Saturday Sooke Country Market. Kaidyn is busy harvesting snap peas! We have carrots, beets, green onions, garlic scapes, zucchini, salad, broccoli, kale, chard, basil and of course STRAWBERRIES !! See you there .
Some of the harvest coming to the Sooke Country Market this Saturday from 10 -12. We have carrots, beets, snap peas, garlic scapes, salad mix, green onions and of course tonnes of STRAWBERRIES !! Hope to see you there!
Ever wonder what 100 pints of strawberries look like! Back breaking work picking them but oh so yummy. We will have these at the Sooke Country Market this Saturday.
The strawberries are starting to ripen! Yay! We will have strawberries this week at the Sooke Country Market as well as yummy salad mix, a few carrots and beets. Once the berries start to ripen faster we will be taking orders, I will post here. This is our first market with direct sale and we will be open from 10 -12 at our usually spot at Otter Point and Eustice. Come check out what the other farmers will have too. Red Earth Farm, Bountiful Bay Farm & Nursery, Croaking Frog Farm and Livin' the Dream Farm will all be there.
Our veggies boxes are starting to get some colour to them and the carrots are starting to size up - they are so tasty! We will be adding customers to our box program in a few weeks. PM me and I can send you the details.
Look what I found today - the first strawberry! We all shared it and it was so tasty and sweet. The rest are still a few weeks off but it is always fun this time of year to search for the first lone ripe berries. I know the kids will be on it for sure, only 8000 plants to search through every day, but the reward is worth it if you find one!
Slugs! People often ask me how I deal with slugs. Well I go out in the evening and pick them off my plants - last night I picked almost 2 lbs of slugs off my summer squash in 20 mins! Disgusting!
First Carrots of the season. Once the kids stop eating them as fast as they grow I might have some to share with you all!
The salad is growing and we have a lot this week. If you would like a 6$ bag please let me know. Pick up available in Sooke or the farm. Delivery can be arranged.
The carrots are still a few weeks away. Still small but boy are they tasty!
The first strawberries are coming! I can't wait!
