I expect, at some time, you have been in a lesson, and you have been told to: 'Half Halt!! .... No... HALF HALT!' And you are riding with a slightly glazed look trying to work out what the hell you are meant to be doing! Happens more than you think, and we get too embarrassed to actually ask... How do I do half halt and how do I know I have actually achieved it???... http://silverdalehorses.com/2020/11/20/about-the-half-halt/

People often try to 'run' before they can walk..... riding is really all about building the basics, so the complex 'stuff' becomes the basics.

If your arm is straight, it has a ripple affect through you body, making it tense, which will in turn make your horse tense. Relax the elbow and let it bend and move, and you will find your shoulders can relax and that means your back can relax and I am sure you can see where I am going with this..... We all have slightly different 'comformation', just like your horses, so I ask my riders to find a neutral position for the shoulder and upper arm but rolling the shoulder and releasing it and letting it relax and then create a straight(ish) line from the bit to the elbow. This is the starting point to finding a better contact.
