Posted in July, 2020 from the King Edward Mine - Their mill volunteers have powered up their Frue Vanner, driven by belts. The Frue Vanner was invented in 1874, by W. B. Frue, Superintendent of the Silver Islet Mine, Ontario, Canada. In the early 20th century, the Frue Vanner was a machine commonly used for washing ore, automating the process and used for the separation of ore on an industrial scale. W.B Frue spent two years developing the system. The Vanner was locate...d with the Stamping Mill on the mainland at Silver Islet. In this short attached video, there is also an old photo of the mill at Dolcoath mine, near Camborne. King Edward Mine has the only Frue Vanner model left in the world. Here is our latest review. I think it captures the spirit of this special place! Thanks Gwen for your beautiful and thoughtful review! President’s Point camp was the perfect base for our annual girls fall hiking trip after the pandemic ruined our plans to travel further afield. The owner, Nancy, was excellent to deal: booking was quick and easy and the information package sent was very detailed and informative. The local contact, Isaac, was also great. He met us as planned ...for an overview of the camp and dealt with a few issues we had with the off the grid systems quickly and efficiently. The camp had everything we needed, the kitchen is well stocked, the linens were all supplied, and the living spaces are comfortable and cozy. The property is large and feels very private. We enjoyed the covered patio very much, having coffee, watching ships come and go from Thunder Bay, and watching the lake with her ever changing moods. A highlight was a spectacular lightening storm. Appreciated extras were the bikes we rode along the Avenue, the Park Pass, and the stacks of beautiful birch firewood. We had saunas, campfires, and even lit the inside woodstove one chilly evening. We brought our recreational kayaks and lucked into calm enough weather to get out and explore several nearby bays and scenic cliffs along the shore. Being on the water with the ship foghorns blasting in the distance was an unforgettable experience. Access to the water on the property was rocky but totally doable. We brought flashlights and candles and used them every night so be prepared. Like other end of the road retreats Silver Islet is remote and the internet can be intermittent. Your phone will only work at the beach inside the park which is a ten minute drive away. If you book here you will not regret it. It is in a magical place and it will cast it’s spell on you. We would definitely go back. See more

Another 5review by Jennifer This little piece of heaven has easily won me over as one of my favourite places ever. I became absolutely enamoured by the history of this cottage and it's surrounding area. Being so close to Sleeping Giant was a wonderful bonus, with the park pass included in the rental. Nancy was a pleasure to deal with, as was the property manager, Isaac. He met us on arrival, punctual and very friendly, showing us around. The day of arrival happened to b...e my birthday, and there was a cute birthday message on the greeting board, and a bottle of wine. Incredibly thoughtful and heartwarming. The directions given for the place were spot on, and Nancy included a very thorough information package in regards to the cottage, how the off grid system works, where to find groceries and necessities, etc. We will definitely be back. HATED to leave. Thanks Jennifer for your beautiful review of your stay at Silver Islet. You and Joe were a pleasure to host. Thanks for spending your special day with us.

I am trying something new with the our rental arrangements - a pilot project during September. For the past several years - we have rented for a week minimum. Due to our last minute cancellation - we were left with 4 weeks available for rent in September. And requests came in - but all for less than a week. So we are trying this for this month only. 3 day minimum and a 10% reduction for rentals of a week or more. What do you think - friends and followers of this page?
