Just a friendly reminder that the stressors we experience have a real impact physiologically as well as psychologically. We first need to tend to the signals the body is giving us rather than jump to try and "fix" our responses. We get pretty good at coping in our own ways...even bad coping is coping. It works in the moment, however if we don't address the root causes then the symptoms only worsen over time. Trauma changes the structures in the brain and can make us hyperawa...re and hyperresponsive to certain triggers. Ignoring these signals only intensifies the underlying stress response. In my work with trauma and anxiety, I help clients better understand how their responses and triggers originate from the body's incredible ability to adapt to protect itself. We work to first understand this struggle from a compassionate lens because only from there can we learn new ways of responding. Be kind to yourself in your struggle. #traumatherapy #simcoecountypsychotherapy #anxiety

We hold on to more than we often realize. We react, and we feel certain things that we can't always seem to make sense of in the moment but this doesn't mean there isn't a reason. A lot of my work with clients is about leaning in with self-compassion rather than self-criticism or judgment. We are collectively going through something that has shaken many of us, this is a reminder to be kind to yourself during this time.

Loving the new home office vibe. Paintings courtesy of @artopia . With everything that has been going on for the past year, having this office space from home to work from has been a true blessing! I'm thankful to have the space to do some incredible work with incredible people #simcoecountypsychotherapy #homeoffice #workingfromhome #therapycouch
Just finished my last session of 2020! This is the view my clients have been seeing since March from my virtual office. This year was certainly not what I expected it would be at this time last year, but I am grateful for the lessons learned and the gift of being able to do the work that I love. My clients continue to inspire me and I am so grateful to bear witness to their journeys of healing and growth. #simcoecountypsychotherapy #therapy #yearofgrowth

This is something I spend a lot of time on with my clients. Rather than looking at ourselves with judgement for struggling, we should consider how our ways of coping evolved and developed given our previous experiences. Even bad coping is coping - we are just trying to keep going even in the most difficult of circumstances. We must first acknowledge how these ways of coping have helped us survive, and have compassion for ourselves. Only then can we truly start to heal.

This. Only when we understand the importance of quality relationships will we really be able to shift our mental health. We need connection - quality connection that is. Space where you get to be you, imperfections and all. What a beautiful gift that is. When we can accept our own worth then others can also. It's okay if you haven't figured it out yet; life isn't always kind. And we are all still figuring it out in our own way. But ask yourself: Do I have people in my life that make me feel safe and loved as I am? If not, I'd encourage you to explore this with your therapist. It's never too late. #relationships #youareworthy #yougettobeyou #simcoecountypsychotherapy
