Why is the Saddle (Manual Hand) Stitch the Sinsear way? There are two types of stitching typically used when creating quality leather goods. The Saddle (Manual Hand) Stitch and the Machine (Double Lock) Stitch. Saddle or Manual... - Before sewing machines were invented, all leather goods were hand sewn by artisans. The hand sewing technique those artisans used is called saddle stitching. This type of stitch is several times stronger than a machine stitch. It uses two rows that alternate sides along the runs. If one stitch is cut or broken the other remains intact and continues to hold the piece together. The overlapping thread through the holes also helps each row hold the other in place. The other advantage is the ability to use stronger, more durable and wax coated thread or cord for increased longevity. Machine (Double Lock) - This type uses two threads running parallel down each side of the run and looped together in the middle. There are advantages and disadvantages to this type. It is faster and easier, but unlike the Saddle Stitch, if one of the runs is broken, it will unravel very quickly and allow the other side to do the same over time (like a thread on your shirt that continues to pull out and allow the seams to fall apart). Sinsear Customs creates durable leather goods that stand the test of time and hard use, therefore, we use only the Saddle Stitch. Although this process takes longer to complete, it creates a longer lasting product, because it is a terrible thing to have a well maintained beautiful leather piece left unusable simply because the stitching fell apart.

Why do well made, top quality full grain leather goods cost so much? 1. It begins with the sourcing and selection of the best materials. Typically, the more environmentally concious and eco friendly tanneries producing the highest quality products are the preference. The video shows an inside look at how leather is made. It is a tour of a modern Italian tanning facility and shows how leather is tanned and finished. ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DyN_xX8NEIk
