In an effort to combat a rising number of COVID-19 cases and reduce the strain on the province’s hospitals, the Government of Ontario is imposing a Provincewide Shutdown to go into effect as of Saturday, December 26 at 12:01 a.m. The shutdown will be in effect for 14 days in Northern Ontario and 28 days in Southern Ontario, and will be evaluated throughout that time period to determine if restrictions can be lifted of if they need to be extended. Sioux Lookout Municipal Council had its first look at the draft 2021 Operating and Capital Budgets last week, which proposed a potential 3.5 per cent tax increase. Councillors expressed an appreciation for the work that the treasurer and department managers had put into the budget, but indicated they would like to look at ways to find additional savings. Sioux Lookout Mayor Doug Lawrance said, The pandemic has created significant challenges for the Municipality, and spoke t...o aspects of the draft budgets and the budget process. The Sioux Lookout Bulletin 27.10.2020

Sioux Lookout OPP are advising the situation on Birchwood Crescent has been safely resolved. Schools have been dismissed, Atwood Street and Birchwood Crescent have reopened to traffic, and Birchwood Crescent residents evacuated earlier in the day are now able to return home. Police had been on the scene since this morning responding to a firearms related incident, which resulted in Sioux North High School and Sioux Mountain Public School being put into a Secure School state for much of the day. No further information has been released.

The Northwestern Health Unit is advising it has received a report of two new positive COVID-19 test results in the Sioux Lookout region. According to the health unit, follow up with the persons involved and their contacts has started and anyone who is identified as a contact for these cases will be contacted directly. For reasons of privacy, NWHU does not release or comment on information about the location of COVID-19 test results. Information about gender, age and method ...of transmission will be posted to the Ontario COVID data website http://ow.ly/qs2650B4SLr when it is available, NWHU advised. The Northwestern Health Unit recommends, that everyone assume COVID-19 is in their community and practise preventive measures like physical distancing, wearing a mask in enclosed public spaces and when physical distancing is a challenge, good hand hygiene, and not touching their face. Anyone who has symptoms, or who has been in contact with a positive case, should get tested. For information about getting tested, please visit the NWHU website http://ow.ly/gyWg50B4SLn for instructions on how to schedule an appointment at an assessment centre.

No further information has been released. ----------------------------------------------------------- Sioux Lookout OPP have closed Atwood Street from First Avenue North to Third Avenue as they continue to respond to a firearms related incident on Birchwood Crescent. Birchwood Crescent is being evacuated. Sioux Lookout OPP shared in a news release, Residents are requested to await contact by police, and not exit through Birchwood Crescent. Nearby schools have been placed under a hold and secure order to ensure the safety of students. Anyone displaced by the evacuation is requested to muster at the Recreation Centre, 85 King Street, until further notice. The Keewatin-Patricia District School Board has advised that Sioux North High School and Sioux Mountain Public School have gone into a Secure School state. The school board explained in a social media post, We were contacted by the Sioux Lookout OPP this morning advising us to go into a Secure School at Sioux Mountain Public School and Sioux North High School (Sioux North was in lockdown briefly before moving to Secure School). The Sioux Lookout OPP have confirmed that putting the schools into Secure School is a precaution and that all students and staff are safe inside the buildings. Secure School is a medium response level and means that students and staff remain in their classrooms with the doors locked and all exterior school doors and windows are also locked.

A fundraising effort is underway, spearheaded by Sioux Lookout residents Nancy Roy and Dennis Leney, to replace the murals on the Edwin Switzer Memorial Sioux Lookout Legion, Branch #78. The murals commemorate Sioux Lookout veterans’ contributions to the army, navy, air force and as war-time nurses and doctors. Leney and Roy are working with Signatures Signs and Stitchery to replace the murals with restored versions. Find out more, here.

Sioux Lookout OPP are asking for the public’s help to locate two lost firearms. Police shared that on October 12, between Sioux Lookout and Hoey Road (Wrong Road), a black plastic gun case containing two .22 caliber semi-automatic rifles was lost out of the back of a pickup truck. Both firearms were secured with trigger locks. Police are asking anyone with information about these firearms to contact the Sioux Lookout Detachment at 807-737-2020 or 1-888-310-1122. The Sioux Lookout Bulletin 31.08.2020

Regional leaders including Nishnawbe Aski Nation Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler, Kenora riding MP Eric Melillo, and Kiiwetinoong MPP Sol Mamakwa are calling for aid for Neskantaga First Nation. A State of Emergency was declared in the community by Neskantaga Chief Chris Moonias and Council following the complete shutdown of the community’s water system due to contamination, forcing the evacuation of the community. MPP Mamakwa visited the community on Oct. 26, sharing on Twitter, ...No running water in the community since a week ago. There are 24 people here keeping the community infrastructure and homes safe. Sioux Lookout OPP have confirmed that Peyton Littledeer has been located in good health. An active search for Peyton had been conducted by the OPP, Lac Seul Police Service, and Canadian Rangers in areas around Sioux Lookout, Hudson, and Lac Seul First Nation.

Necan was in Sioux Lookout on Sept. 20 sharing her fears regarding a proposed Deep Geological Repository (DGR) in the Ignace area. Sioux Lookout OPP are asking for the public’s help to locate Peyton Littledeer, who was last seen in downtown Sioux Lookout on Wednesday evening.... Peyton, 17, is described as a 5'6" First Nations female with a slim build and long black hair. She was last seen wearing a black North Face hooded jacket, black jeans, black Nike shoes with an orange swoosh, carrying a black and grey backpack. Police and family are concerned for her safety. An active search is being conducted by the OPP, Lac Seul Police Service, and Canadian Rangers in areas around Sioux Lookout, Hudson, and Lac Seul First Nation.
