Student Daily Covid Screen In January, the Ontario Ministry of Education announced that enhanced screening protocols will be required for secondary students (grades 9-12) beginning on February 10, 2021. Beginning tomorrow (Wednesday, February 10, 2021), secondary students attending school in-person must present daily confirmation that they have the completed the Ontario School Screening Tool. You can find the screening tool at this link - https://covid-19.ontario.ca/school...-screening. Students are asked to please complete the screen prior to arriving at school so they can provide confirmation of it being completed upon their arrival. It’s important that any student who cannot pass the school screening tool does not attend school and that they follow the direction provided through the online screening tool. Verification of the daily screening tool will be part of the daily attendance process that takes place in the classroom. Students will be asked to show their teacher a picture of the daily screening tool, with the green check box, on their phone or chromebook. Alternatively, students can show their teacher a paper copy of the screening tool with their name and date on it.

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s): Our school will be participating in the 2020-21 COMPASS survey. Researchers from the University of Waterloo will ask students to complete a 30-minute questionnaire about healthy eating, physical activity, sedentary behaviour, smoking, alcohol and drug-use, academic achievement, and mental health. While this survey is usually conducted in class, due to the current pandemic, it will be conducted online this year. It will also include some questions a...bout how youth are dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. The survey is confidential and the name of your child(ren) will not be linked with their survey responses. The survey data will be stored on secure servers at the University of Waterloo for a minimum of 7 years and only research staff will have access to them. While your child(ren) will not benefit directly by participating, survey responses will help researchers gather details about youth health, and this information will be shared with our school to help improve school policies and practices related to health, which can benefit many students. Both the school board and our school have given approval to conduct the study. The survey is repeated once each year, following the same students. There are no known or anticipated risks to participation in this survey. On Monday, March 1, 2021, students in grades 9 to 12 with parental permission will be emailed a link and asked to take part in the online survey. Students are free to refuse to participate or to withdraw from the survey at any time, without penalty. You are encouraged to talk with your child(ren) about the importance of completing this survey. The link will remain active for two weeks. If you do not wish for your child to participate, please contact the COMPASS Research Coordinator, Breanne Reel, at [email protected] or by phone at (519) 888-4567 ext. 48271 by Sunday, February 28, 2021. Permission will be assumed unless you notify us otherwise. In your email, please include: your child's name, your child's grade, the name of your child's school This project has been reviewed and received ethics clearance through a University of Waterloo Research Ethics Committee (ORE#30118). If you have questions for the Committee, please contact the Office of Research Ethics, at [email protected]. To view a copy of the survey questions or for more information about the COMPASS project, please visit www.compass.uwaterloo.ca, or contact COMPASS Research Coordinator, Breanne Reel, at [email protected]

NWOSSC Bus Alerts Stakeholders and families, This morning we experienced technical issues that prevented subscribers from receiving text message alerts about the bus cancellation affecting all areas today. We apologize for any inconvenience that this may have caused. We are working to resolve these issues, but may experience further disruptions to text message alerts. Extreme cold weather is expected to continue in northwestern Ontario through the week. Please watch for email... alerts related to service cancellations, and please be reminded that all bus cancellations and delays over 15 minutes are first posted on www.nwobus.ca under Bus Status. A green status indicates that all buses are running on time, yellow indicates that some routes are delayed or cancelled (routes will be listed), and a red status indicates that our entire system is impacted. If you are unsure if buses are running, especially during periods of inclement weather or extreme cold, please check your Bus Status at www.nwobus.ca. See more

NOTICE TO FAMILIES - KPDSB Schools Reopening for In-Person Learning on Monday, January 11, 2021 To view this notice to families as a PDF, please visit this lin...k - http://www.kpdsb.on.ca/.../view/covid-19-information-updates Today (Thursday, January 7, 2021), the Ontario Government issued a media release to announce that schools in our area will return to in-person learning on Monday, January 11, 2021. The government also announced today that the community shutdown in Northern Ontario will be extended by two weeks. While the extended shutdown impacts different sectors, it does not affect the reopening of our schools on Monday, January 11, 2021. This announcement means that all KPDSB schools will reopen to students and staff for in-person learning on Monday. School bus transportation will also resume on Monday with regular routes and schedules. Students learning virtually through the KPDSB Virtual School will continue with remote learning as usual, they are not impacted by this announcement. School Screening Tool and Health and Safety Protocols As we prepare to return to our schools on Monday, we wanted to remind families of the importance of completing the Ontario School Screening online tool each day before sending your child(ren) to school - https://covid-19.ontario.ca/school-screening/. Any students who are feeling unwell or cannot pass the school screening should not attend school. We also ask that families remind their children about our health and safety protocols, which include masking (required for students in grades 4-12 and strongly encouraged for students in Kindergarten to Grade 3), physical distancing, hand hygiene and cohorting. Our staff will also remind students of these protocols. Reminder of Student Travel Advisory We issued an updated Student Travel Advisory to all families on December 18, 2020. If your child must travel, please be aware of the following information. Inter-provincial Travel Any students who have travelled outside of the province (or the country) should not attend school board properties for 14 calendar days upon their return and must be able to pass Ontario’s school screening tool prior to returning to school. Travel within Ontario Any students who travel to an area of Ontario in the Grey/Lockdown level of public health measures should not attend school board properties for 14 calendar days upon their return and must be able to pass Ontario’s school screening tool prior to returning to their school. The public health areas that were in the Grey/Lockdown level of public health measures on December 26 prior to the provincial shutdown are below for your reference. o Toronto o Windsor-Essex County o York Region o Peel o Hamilton If you must travel for essential reasons, families are asked to be aware of those areas that are in grey/lockdown level that require students to not attend our schools for 14 days. This changes with the level of virus transmission in Public Health Unit areas. Families who must travel can take steps to reduce their risk, including: Limiting use of public transportation Maintaining physical distancing and using a mask Avoiding crowded areas Limiting interactions with others Not spending time in a setting that has been declared as an outbreak Practicing hand hygiene If there are extenuating circumstances for your family, you are encouraged to reach out to your school principal to discuss. Academic support will be provided for families whose children are not able to attend school due to this advisory. We are asking all families to please continue to be mindful that COVID-19 is still with us and that different areas of the province and the country can have different levels of the virus in the community. The safest option to prevent the spread is to stay in the area of your home community or to stay in the region as per travel advisories and follow all public health protocols. Should you have any questions regarding this communication, please reply to this email or contact your school principal. Thank you for your assistance in protecting the health and safety of our staff and students. Your efforts during these difficult times are appreciated. Sincerely, Sherri-Lynne Pharand, Director of Education

Inclement Weather Days (Snow Days) and Virtual Learning School busses have been cancelled today across the region today, February 8th, due to the extreme cold weather. Please be aware that we have revised our inclement weather protocols on days that result in school bus cancellations. On these days, ALL instruction will be virtual/remote. With the current quadmester system in secondary schools, we recognize that inclement weather and bus cancellations, which result in misse...d class time for many students, can have an even greater impact. One missed day of class in the quadmester system is equal to missing two days of class in a semester system. Students without internet access will work on pre-arranged work or on offline work on their Chromebooks. We encourage all students to stay home on inclement weather days. However, students who do attend school will have a cohort-specific assigned space to work in for internet access. Students will not work in their regular classrooms. While this is a departure from previous practice, we feel it is an important step to take to support secondary students in their academic achievement. See more

Good Afternoon Parents/Guardians, As you may be aware, on December 21st the Premier announced a province wide shut down effective December 26th at 12:01am, and as a result of the shutdown our school will be moving to teacher-led remote learning for the period beginning Monday January 4th to Friday January 8th inclusive, and we will be resuming in-person instruction on Monday January 11, 2021. For your information, PPM 164 requires us to have synchronous learning for 80% of ...the time and asynchronous learning for the remaining 20% of the time. (PPM 164). Here are some definitions that may be helpful with any communication you may be needing to send for clarification: Remote learning: Learning that occurs when classes are taught at a distance and when students and educators are not in a conventional classroom setting. Remote learning takes place in times of extended interruption to in-person learning for example, as a result of a pandemic or natural disaster. Classes can be synchronous or asynchronous and can be taught online through a Learning Management System (LMS) or by using videoconferencing tools. In some cases, they may be delivered through emails, print materials, broadcast media, or telephone calls. Synchronous learning: Learning that happens in real time. Synchronous learning involves using text, video, or voice communication in a way that enables educators and other members of the school- or board-based team to instruct and connect with students in real time. Synchronous learning supports the well-being and academic achievement of all students, including students with special education needs, by providing educators and students with an interactive and engaging way to learn. It helps teachers provide immediate feedback to students and enables students to interact with one another. Asynchronous learning: Learning that is not delivered in real time. Asynchronous learning may involve students watching pre-recorded video lessons, completing assigned tasks, or contributing to online discussion boards. This is our planned daily schedule for the week of January 4th to January 8th : Period 1: 9:00 to 11:00 (synchronous) Period 1: 11:00 to 11:30 (asynchronous) (teachers will be communicating a break schedule to students) Lunch 11:30 to 12:30 Period 2: 12:30 to 2:30 (synchronous) Period 2: 2:30 to 3:00 (asynchronous) (teachers will be communicating a break schedule to students) Classroom teachers will be sending out a reminder of the link to the virtual learning environment to students’ Google Classrooms, along with their schedule, on Monday morning. If you are having any connectivity issues, please contact the school and we will do our best to assist and support your child’s learning.

As a follow up to our letter to families last week, below you will find a link to a survey for families to indicate if their child will be attending school in-person or remotely for the 2020-2021 school year. We want to remind families that attending school in-person is voluntary. PLEASE FOLLOW THIS LINK TO FILL OUT THE SURVEY - https://forms.gle/bHsTXLXe3SB74jDm7 Surveys must be filled out by August 17, 2020, for a student to start school on September 3, 2020 (the first day of school). We are asking families to fill out one survey per child as we know families may choose to make a different decision for each of their children for a variety of reasons. Should you have questions you would like to have answered prior to completing the survey, please respond to this email and we will do our best to answer your questions as quickly as possible. The Government of Ontario released school reopening plans for the 2020-2021 school year on July 30, 2020. Please see the letter below for families from Directo...r of Education, Sherri-Lynne Pharand, regarding the reopening of KPDSB schools. To find this information on our website, please follow this link - http://www.kpdsb.on.ca//ontario-releases-guide-to-reopenin You can find the Guide to Reopening Ontarios Schools by following this link - https://www.ontario.ca/pa/guide-reopening-ontarios-schools. You can view a letter from the Minister of Education to families by following this link - http://www.kpdsb.on.ca//Letter%20to%20Ontario%E2%80%99s%20 Dear KPDSB Families, Today, July 30, 2020, the Government of Ontario released their school reopening plans for the 2020-2021 school year. You can find the Guide to Reopening Ontarios Schools by clicking here. We will release additional details specific to our schools in the coming weeks, but wanted to share the information that was released today with families. We want to remind families that attending school in-person is voluntary. For students not attending in-person, remote/distance learning will be available, however, families should be aware that once they have selected remote instruction, should they wish to switch to in-person at a later date, they wont be able to do so until predetermined dates throughout the school year. Please watch for a survey next week that families can use to indicate if their child will be attending in-person, or remotely in September. Elementary Schools (applies to students in Kindergarten to Grade 8): The government has announced all elementary schools in the province will open with conventional in-person delivery of teaching and instruction, five days a week, with enhanced health and safety protocols as outlined below under public health protocols. Parents will continue to have the option to opt their elementary children out of in-person delivery (a survey will be released next week for families to indicate if their child will be attending in-person). Nearly all programming will continue with special considerations as outlined below under public health protocols. Class sizes will not be reduced, however, students will remain with their classes and teacher(s) (also referred to as a cohort) all day with staggered lunches and recesses to ensure students interact with their teacher(s) and classmates only. Secondary Schools (applies to students in Grades 9-12): The government has announced all secondary schools in Ontario have been divided into two groups, designated and non-designated. Our school board has been placed into the non-designated group, which means our secondary schools will open with in-person conventional delivery, but with cohort limitations and with enhanced health and safety protocols as outlined below under public health protocols. Parents will continue to have the option to opt their secondary children out of in-person delivery (a survey will be released next week for families to indicate if their child will be attending in-person). All school boards are expected to adopt timetabling methods that emphasize cohorting of students, particularly at the secondary level, as much as possible to limit the number of direct and indirect student-to-student contacts. Efforts to cohort secondary school students may impact the traditional four course delivery model in a semestered school. In order to reduce the risk of transmission and to support contact tracing, school boards are to develop timetables that limit indirect and direct student contacts to approximately 100 students in the school, and are encouraged to keep secondary school students in a maximum of two in-person class cohorts. There are different models available to support timetabling students in secondary schools to limit indirect and direct student contacts. As a Board, we will be discussing our proposed model with the Ministry of Education next week and will share additional information with secondary families following that meeting. Enhanced Public Health Protocols for all Schools: Masks Non-medical masks will be mandatory for all students in grades 4-12. Non-medical masks are not required but are encouraged for students in Kindergarten to Grade 3. Students may wear their own non-medical masks, and non-medical masks will also be made available for students through their school. Reasonable exceptions on the requirement to wear masks will apply. Physical Distancing Physical distancing will be in place wherever possible inside of schools/offices. Hand Washing/Sanitizing - Hand sanitizing stations will be available throughout our schools and offices. School staff will support students in ensuring proper hand washing is occurring frequently. Cleaning and Disinfecting - Heightened cleaning practices will be in place in all schools and offices. Schools will have custodial staff in the building and available to support frequent cleaning and sanitizing throughout the school day. Shared spaces - Shared spaces like gymnasiums and cafeterias will remain open to students. Shared items will be sanitized before being used again. School Bus Transportation Enhanced cleaning and use of personal protective equipment will be in place for drivers, as well as students (non-medical masks required for students in grades 4-12 and encouraged for students in Kindergarten to Grade 3). Students will have assigned seats. Active forms of travel (for example, walking and cycling) and private transportation by parents and caregivers, are encouraged where possible, to ease pressure on transportation demands. As always, we are here to support you and your family. Please remember that our website has a COVID-19 section with supports for students and families during the pandemic, including Mental Health resources. You can also follow us on social media (search KPDSB on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram) for information and updates. 2020-2021 SCHOOL YEAR POSSIBLE MODELS FOR A RETURN TO LEARNING To view this information as pdfs on our website, please follow this link - http://www.kpdsb.on....ca//possible-models-for-a-return-to-le The Ministry of Education has released three potential models for a return to learning for the 2020-2021 school year. In order to help families prepare for the upcoming year, we wanted to share information about each of the models so families know what options are being considered (see graphics attached to this post or follow the link to our website). The Ministry of Education has indicated they will let school boards know which of the three models we will be following during the first week of August. Once that decision has been made, we will communicate with families which of the models we will be using for the start of the school year. Please see the bullets below for additional information around a return to learning and the 2020-2021 school year. - A return to our buildings is voluntary. Parents/guardians are able to choose whether they will send their child to school or not in the fall should models 1 or 2 be chosen by the Ministry of Education. For students who will not be physically returning to our schools, we will continue to offer distance learning opportunities (see Model 3 graphic for more information) - Information in the graphics for the three models is subject to change as information is released and the impact of the COVID-19 virus evolves. - Depending on public health recommendations and the spread of the virus, families should be aware that next school year could ultimately see a combination of the three models. Our schools will be flexible and adjust to any changes in the delivery of education as needed. - The KPDSB is working with other area school boards to ensure consistency for families for the 2020-2021 school year as much as possible. Once a decision is announced by the Ministry of Education in early August with regards to which model our schools will follow, we will share detailed plans for your child(ren)s school with you. Following the release of those plans, we will once again be surveying families to find out if you plan to send your child to school should Model 1 or 2 be announced. Your response to this survey will be critical to our planning, particularly for cohorting of students, if needed, and school bus transportation. As per direction from the Ministry of Education, once the model for schools is announced and detailed information is shared, families should be aware that there will be a deadline (date to be announced in early August) to let us know if you plan to send their children to school. Families who do not respond by that date may not be able to start school on the first day but would be able to start at a later date as determined by their school.
