The Christmas Elves in Long Term Care were busy last night setting out all of the presents for the residents to wake up to this Christmas morning! Our Christmas Tea Party has become a tradition for many each and every year. Although we can't host the event at Affinity Place this holiday season, we will be delivering Christmas Tea Parties directly to nursing homes this year! With help from Sun Country Hearing Ltd. we will deliver the tea, coffee, dainties, gift bags and prizes directly to each nursing home in Estevan so they can enjoy a little holiday cheer right at home!

Our auction has gone digital! This year, we will be bringing our famous Festival of Trees Silent Auction ONLINE with help from our friends at Southern Plains Co-op Ltd and DiscoverEstevan.com. Mark your calendars for November 13th! More information about prizes and packages coming soon!

At this year's Radiothon for Life, our 12-hour broadcast on Sun 102.3 Fm, CJ 1150 Radio and Rock 106FM will feature patient stories from many different departments as we celebrate local healthcare. One individual we will hear more from is Dennis Moore, a patient at our hospital that has taken advantage of the TeleHealth Department. This is what Dennis had to say:... "We are so fortunate to have our hospital here in Estevan to serve Southeast Saskatchewan. We have great doctors, nurses and staff. They are always upgrading equipment such as being able to have a CT Scanner and dialysis equipment to save patients from making trips to Regina. Upgrading is always being done to the building as well. To be able to have TeleHealth sessions right here at St. Joseph's Hospital has been very valuable to my own health condition. The hospital is also able to assist patients with other cancer treatments that help with the stress level of not having to drive to Regina. It is truly a blessing to have such a great hospital as St. Joseph's to give such excellent care and service." - Dennis

With all of the new faces that are coming with the Addiction Recovery Centre at our hospital, we are so excited about this one! Everyone meet Lola! She will be a huge help for patients and staff in the new Centre.

We were very excited to receive a grant from United Way Estevan in partnership with the Government of Canada Emergency Community Support Fund to purchase new iPads for residents in the Special Care Home at our hospital. These iPads will be used for both communicating with families and for residents with dementia as they use different programs and games to increase stimulation and improve overall well being. Thank you to our local United Way and to our friends at House of Stationary for helping us out with these!

One family that we have the opportunity to hear from is the Gonas family. This is Scarlette. She was born in February at St. Joseph's Hospital. This is what her mom, Emily had to say:... "When I first went into labour my husband and I headed to the hospital to get checked. My husband insisted we go right away because my contractions started strong and only 2-3 minutes apart. I got to the hospital and they admitted me right away. I was the only one in the maternity ward at the time. I was put in a room beside the nurses station and I could hear my doctor phone the nurses and ask how I was doing during my labour. I appreciated the fact that he was thinking of me and checking on me. I stayed at the hospital for a few days after birth and the nurses made sure me and baby were 100% okay before we went home. I was so glad to be able to deliver here in Estevan because I didn't have to drive far with contractions, or have to worry about the weather as I was due in February. I was also able to have my family around to help me at the hospital, which was comforting. The nurses were able to spend so much time helping me with nursing. I also got a lot of one on one care from my doctor and nurses." - Emily

We are so excited for the Addiction Recovery Centre to open this fall! With this new department comes new faces to our hospital. Meet Juanita, the new Clinical Manager at the Addiction Recovery Centre at our hospital! Here is what she had to say:... "A few months ago, I was asked By Carson McPherson (Managing Director) and Elizabeth Loudon (Clinical Director) of Cedars at Cobble Hill, if I would move to Estevan. At that point I was not even sure that it was in Canada. This community has been so kind and welcoming, and I cannot begin to explain how much that has meant to me. I have been here since June 16, 2020 and it already feels like home. I am so grateful and privileged to have been asked to be the Clinical Manager of the SJH Addiction and Recovery Centre. Having grown up in a family full of addiction and working in this field for over 25 years, I know how important it is for communities to have support with this difficult and often misunderstood disease of addiction close to home. In the past, if someone from our community had to go to treatment or detox, they would have to leave their families behind, and often not see them for the duration of their stay in a treatment facility. Addiction is a family disease, and for families in Estevan to have a facility where the whole family can be supported is not only a huge benefit, but such a blessing. Another benefit for this community, is that in a time where the economy is struggling, we can employ local community members and support local businesses. As Greg Hoffort and Mark Pettitt work tirelessly to make sure the patients have an amazing home like Centre to move into, I am in full training mode with all staff that has been hired so far. I know I speak for the whole team when I say that we cannot wait for the Centre to open so we can start helping families heal. " Welcome to our community and hospital, Juanita!
