April 1973, The New York Times "Up to now Seattle's dams have backed up little water into Canada but now the city wants to raise the height of its newest dam Ross Dam, 125 feet to an elevation of 1,725 feet. This would create a new lake in Canada with a shoreline of 20.9 miles." https://skagiteec.org/blog... #rosslake #rossdam #skagithistory #skagitriver #seattle #transboundary #nytimes #pnw #upperleft #cascadia

For this Gold Rush Trail storyteller episode, we head to the heart of Nlaka’pamux territory in the Fraser Canyon to meet Tuckkwiowhum Village elder, Byron Spink...s. Here, he shares with us the untold story of the Canyon War. The conflict began in the summer of 1858 when miners arrived in the Fraser Canyon with a yearning for gold and began mining without permission from the Nlaka’pamux Chiefs. After numerous miners staged violent attacks on the Nlaka’pamux people, Statimc, Secwépemc, Okanagan and Yakima people travelled to the Fraser Canyon to help defend Nlaka’pamux territory and their people. Violence ensued until the 22nd of August 1858 when the Nlaka’pamux Nation led by Chief David Sexpínlhemx (Spintlum) negotiated a truce with Captain Henry Snyder to end the bloodshed and accommodate the newcomers. Wishing Saul the very best as he plans his next chapter(s). The legacy of his work remains productive and successful at the facility and programming of the North Cascades Institute which continues to influence thousands of lives!

In July 2019, government appointed panel members Garry Merkel and Al Gorley to lead an old-growth strategic review. They gathered input and examined old-growth management from a variety of perspectives. On April 30, 2020, they submitted 14 recommendations to the Province in their report. https://skagiteec.org/blog/
